The primary learning outcomes to be achieved with this lesson include:
PLO: Students
will sort objects into appropriate groups using one characteristic
(size, color, shape).
Materials and Equipment:
1. Have an example of Mini-Research eBook activity to show students
2.1 Basket per child
3. Blocks of different and like shapes
4. Pencil & paper (to make notes for lesson plan assessment and
reflections)
5. Modification of a lesson developed by Jessica Nix
Technology Connection:
Technologies that will be used in this lesson include:
Procedures:
Step One:
Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer. Explain to
students that you are going to use the computer to read an
Mini-Research eBook
about sorting objects by using
one characteristic (shape, size, color).
List 2 or more
questions that introduce students
to your Mini-Research eBook that will establish a
connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them:
1. "Have you ever sorted your toys by the
same color or because they were all the same size?
2. "Can you tell me some things you have
seen sorted by color, shape, or size at home or in your classroom?"
Today we are going
to read an eBook
on the Internet. I have made a special Mini-Research eBook on the
Internet for your
class. (During discussion have students turn around away from the
computer to interact.)
Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes
Step Two
Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Students will sit at the computer where they can control the mouse
and computer.) (Explain to students the process of the
lesson.) After we read the Mini-Research eBook and visit
several websites.
Check for understanding
Students with teacher assistance will read the Mini-Research eBook,
explore, and
discuss
the information in the four linking websites that go with the
Mini-Research eBook. Ask
students guiding
questions about the important concepts in the Mini-Research eBook and
the linking
websites. List four or more questions from each of your
linking websites that will guide your students to gain information for
your PLO.
1. On the second page of
the eBook, what characteristic were we using to sort the objects?
2. In the picture
on page 3 of the eBook, what shape were all of the objects in the
sorted group?
3. In the picture on page 4 of
the eBook, the objects were sorted by size. Were all the objects big of
small?
4. On the fourth page of the
eBook, what characteristic were we using to sort the objects?
Practice and feedback related to the
PLO
Read the Mini-Research eBook project to students. Explain to
students that
they
are going to put all the objects
back in order that were messed up during center time by sorting the
objects using one characteristic (color, shape, size).
Tell
the
students that the information that they will need to complete
their Mini-Research eBook project is listed and connected in
the Mini-Research eBook
activity. Review the
information in the linked website in
the Mini-Research eBook activity with the students to emphasize
interesting and important information students will need to complete
mission
project.

Out
of Place: Freeze! Center time is over and it is time to start cleaning
up. But wait, everything is out of order. The markers in the writing
center should be sorted by color. The blocks in the block center should
be sorted by shape. The books in the reading center should be sorted by
size. Can you help me sort all the things back in order? If we work
together, we can get this done!
|
| Lesson #2 Directions: 1. Students will receive a basket of blocks that are different shapes. 2. Sort the blocks by shape. 3. If you need help remembering how to sort by shape you can look back at page 3 of the eBook. |
Step Three
Closure:
Have students discuss their Mini-Research eBook activity and
information they found on the Internet.
Tell students that your Mini-Research eBook Website is on the Internet
and
they can
visit the website at school or home. Explain to students
that you are going to put their pictures and information
on the Internet and they will be able to share their mission
projects with
their friends and family. (If possible teacher should take
brief
notes during the lesson and concluding discussions to be added
later
to the assessment and reflections in lesson plan.)

Comments & Reflections:
Assessment for the
Primary Learning Outcomes (PLOs)
Student will be assessed through
observation and oral discussion to
evaluate if student with teacher guidance is able to listen to
information to gain knowledge. (Use information from your PLO at top
of page of this lesson.)
| Level 3 | Level 2 | Level 1 | |
| PLO: Students will sort objects into appropriate groups using one characteristic (size, color, shape). | Student with teacher guidance is able to sort objects by color or shape and identify what characteristic is being used to sort the objects. | Student with teacher guidance is able to identify what characteristic is being used to sort the objects. | Student is not able with teacher guidance to sort objects by shape or color and is not able to identify what characteristic is being used to sort the objects. |

Student was able to complete the
online educational games and identify what characteristic we used to
sort objects. The student was unable to recall the three

Student was able to complete the
online educational games and identify what characteristic we used to
sort objects. The student was unable to answer all of the questions
correctly or recall information we discussed during our eBook Lesson.
The student correctly completed the Real World activity and could
identify what characteristic they used. |
1. Comment and describe the learning strategy that you implemented in your Mini-Research eBook Teaching Strategy Lesson. (* To receive full credit description must include a minimum of two sentences and a detailed example.)
Students were able to view the eBook
and digital pictures which showed the three characteristics objects can
be sorted by. After viewing the digital picture, the students were able
to play online educational games on which they had to sort different
objects by different characteristics. After playing the game, we would
review what we had just learned. While playing the online games, I
asked the students to identify what characteristic Curious George was
using to sort the objects. The students were able to correctly aswer
that he was sorting by shape.
2. State evidence to show that
your students gained knowledge during your Mini-Research eBook Teaching
Strategy Lesson. (*
To receive full credit description must include a minimum of two
sentences and a detailed example.)
Students were able to answer questions correctly after the eBook
lesson. The students were able to identify the three characteristics
objects are sorted by. Students were also able to complete the Real
World activity correctly. Students were to identify which
characteristic to sort the items by. The students correctly identified
the the items were to be sorted by shape.
3. Give at least one suggestion that would lead to improving your teaching practices and student achievement. (* To receive full credit description must include a minimum of two sentences and a detailed example.)
After teaching and reflecting back on
the lesson, I would have distributed the questions more evenly among
the students. I had one student who was more willing to answer
questions than the other. I would have also given a quick lesson on how
to efficiently use the mouse to control the computer screen. The
students did not know how to scroll the screen down or which button to
click on.
