COURSE DESCRIPTION
Prerequisites: ECED 2999 or SPEC 2999; ACED 2400.  Corequisite: ECED 3190.  This course explores the integration and application of technology into the early childhood and elementary curricula.  Achieved through modeling and applying teaching and learning strategies; discussions of technology and pedagogy; strategies of classroom management; review and evaluation of technology and software appropriate for use with young children; and the development of integrated technology learning activities, which include the Georgia Performance Standards and/or the Georgia QCC Standards.

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK STANDARDS (CFS)
I.  CONTENT AND CURRICULUM:  Teachers demonstrate a strong content knowledge of content area(s) and appropriate for their certification levels.
III.  LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS: Teachers create learning environments that encourage positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.

  PLANNING AND INSTRUCTION: Teachers design and create instructional experiences based on their knowledge of content and curriculum, students, learning environments, and assessment.

ATTENDANCE POLICY
Attendance is important.  If you are not able to attend class, please email the instructor, and have someone take notes for you.  Course policy states that after 2 absences, the student will lose two points for each additional absence, and one point will be deducted for each tardy from your ECED 3000 final grade. In addition, please refer to the VSU Attendance Policy in the VSU Undergraduate Catalog.

Technology Connection
Technologies that will be used in this lesson include: computer with Internet connection, a picture developed using a computer drawing program, and a designed website that includes computer painted picture and links to cultural websites that represent the country in multicultural literature book.  Students will use computers to view website selected by the teacher that provide information about the culture represented in the story.
 
Procedure:

Step One Introduction:
1. Show students the graphic organizer. Say,: “Yesterday we read a book about ___________
Show them the globe and ask if anyone can find Georgia, the US and the place where the story took place___________

This is a graphic organizer which shows information about_________ where the story took place. 
Who can tell me something about the story?
Allow students to answer. Accept the answers given
Explain to the students that we are going to learn more about the place where the story took place.
2. Look at the graphic organizer and discuss the picture representations of the culture that they will be learning about:
               I.E. Clothing, Food, People, Products, etc.
 (Estimated Time 15 minutes)
4  Read each culture question  under the graphic organizer (or on the graphic organizer) and ask a student to click on the icon below to find the information
List the 3 culture questions and web site address where the information is located:

5.  Go over the information on the web site and ask the students to respond or make comments about what they see.
Allow students to take turns using the mouse to click on the links and read information or provide directions for them as they look at the web sites with you (the teacher).

Step Two Reinforcement Activity
6. Tell the children:
Now that we have visited the website sites, and learned about the culture, I am giving you each a piece of paper and you can draw pictures about the things you learned or write about the things you learned from the web sites we visited  today
You can change this activity or elaborate on it to do a hands on activity such as writing their names in another language, making an instrument, clothes,  jewelry, tasting foods, etc. that relate to the web sites.
7. Allow the students to discuss their work and the various cultural things that they drew or learned about
8  Ask each student to describe 3 things that they learned about the culture from looking at the web sites.
  (Estimated time 15 – 30  minutes depending on the project)
 
(You will need to save the students’ pictures and projects, or take pictures of them in the activity.  Avoid photographing their faces.

Later you will scan the students’ papers or add photos to your web page. to place in your ECE Portfolio.
