Greg Harrell's Baby Comments

The first thing that I noticed when Sean was born was the immediate love that I felt for him. I felt the attachment the very second that he was born. It totally caught me by surprise. I thought that it would be something that developed over time - sort of the way a friendship grows. Day-by-day, I thought that my love for him would develop. It didn't work that way though. I loved him from day one without knowing what his personality was like. I've decided that maybe this is how God teaches us about unconditional love. Too often we put conditions on our love for others. "I'll love you if...." is too often our motto. Maybe that's not supposed to be the way we do it.

I've also learned a lot about how unseen hands can help us in life. Sean enjoys climbing up the steps of our step-stool. It doesn't matter that he just learned to walk, he still just charges up the steps without hesitation. Of course, I have my hands a few inches from his body to catch him if he falls, but he doesn't know that. How many people have helped me along the way in life that I didn't see their helping hands? Sean recently tripped over the step-stool and I caught him. Since that happened, he reaches out his hand to me for help as he reaches the top, and most dangerous, step. It seems that God has been teaching me about the help that he has offered my entire life. The unseen hands were there when I charged ahead on my own without knowing the dangers of the steps that I was taking. He was also there to catch me when I fell. Just like Sean, I'm now willing to reach out for help before I try to climb the next step.

I've learned a lot more, but I don't want to write a book! What have you learned from having children? Send your comments to my e-mail address below.
