Our
Legislative branch is made up of two houses; the House of
Representatives and the Senate.
The House of
Representatives
Members
of the House are elected every two (2) years. The number of
representatives from each state is determined by that state's
population. States with a lot of people have a lot of representatives.
States with less people have fewer representatives. For instance
California has 53 representatives, while Georgia only has eleven.
Because members are elected every two years this body of our
legislature is very flexible and more accurately reflects the mood of
the country at any given time. There are a total of 435 representatives
in the House. The following website has a lot more information about
the House
of Representives.
The Senate
Members of
the Senate are elected every six (6) years. Each state is allowed to
have two senators, regardless of size, so Georgia has two, as well as
California. Since we have 50 states guess how many senators we have?
The Senate is led by the President of the Senate, who is also the Vice
President. He only votes if there is a tie. The following website has
some very useful information about the
Senate.
