Undergraduate Percussion students who wish to major in the field of music
at Valdosta State
University may choose from two degrees. The Bachelor of Music is a professional music degree
and is available with majors either in music education or in the applied music performance area.
Students who elect and qualify by audition for the performance degree may also select the
Jazz Performance area. The Bachelor of Music degree in music education meets the requirements
for T-4 teacher certification in the field of music in the state of Georgia. The Bachelor of
Arts with a major in music is a liberal arts degree and is offered by the Department of Music in
conjuction with the College of Arts and Sciences. The Master of
Music degree in Percussion Performance and the Master of Music Education
degree is also
available for students who are interested in graduate study. Percussion instruction is also
available, subject to demand, for the non-music major who wishes to develop a music aptitude for
personal enrichment. Valdosta State University is a member of the National Association of Schools of
Music (NASM).
Within the framework of an outstanding department of music, the applied percussion student receives
a comprehensive four year study in applied music through private lessons, percussion ensemble,
percussion studio classes, recitals, ensembles, and masterclasses. Each student receives a
rigorous training and experience in technique, solo repertoire, orchestral repertoire, jazz,
small ensembles, and large ensemble experiences gained from the Steel Drum Band, Percussion
Ensemble, Orchestra, Concert Band, Jazz Combo, Jazz Big Band, Marching Band, and pep band. All
percussion students have an opportunity to participate in all ensembles
every semester in residence. Diversity is stressed for all percussion
students.
