Technology Connection:
Technologies that will be used in this lesson include:

Procedures:
Step One: Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer.  Explain to students that you are going to use the computer to find out information about the five senses.  List 2 or more questions that introduce students to topic of the five senses that establish a connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them: "Have you ever learned anything about the five senses before?  "Can you tell me something that you know about your senses?"   Today we are going to learn about the five senses by visiting websites on the Internet and we will do a fun activity to learn more about the five senses.  I have made a special five senses page for your class.  (During discussion have students turn around away from the computer to interact.)

Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes

Step Two Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Have students sit at the computer where they can control the mouse and computer.)  (Explain to students the process of the lesson.)  After we visit several websites about the five senses you will glue an object that represents each of the five senses onto contruction paper that will be labeled.

Check for understanding
Have students explore and discuss the information in each of the 3 pre-selected websites.  Ask students guiding questions about the important concepts in each of the visited websites.  (Save "the Fabulous Five Senses" website to use in Mission Project.)  List three or more questions.
1. Can you name what all of the five senses are?
2. Can you name what some of the body parts allow you to have these senses?
3
. What do our five senses help us do?

Practice and feedback related to the PLO
Read mission project to students.  Explain to students that they are going to be find objects to represent the five senses around their classroom.  Discuss the different kinds of objects that could be found for each sense. Tell the students that the information that they will need to complete their mission project is listed and connected in the  mission activity.  Visit website for information for mission project, "The fabulous Five Senses."  Discuss the information in the linked website in the mission activity with the students to emphasize interesting and important information students will need to complete mission project.

Mission Activity

You have a very important mission assigned to you.  You are in charge of finding out what each of the Five Fabulous Senses do.  That means your ears, eyes, tongue, nose, and hands are all in charge of a different job that must be done.  You must find five different things for your senses to do: food to taste, a flower to smell, a picture to see, a sound to hear, and something to feel.  Think you can do it?

Mission Steps

1.  You will go to this website that will tell you everything you need to know about your five senses.
2.  In your classroom you will find a way to use your sense of taste and glue it to your paper.
3.  In your classroom you will find something that has a texture you can touch and feel with your hands.  You will glue a piece of it to your paper.
4.  In your classroom you will find something that you can hear with your ears and draw a picture of it on your paper.
5.  In your classroom you will find something you can see with your eyes and glue it to your paper.
6.  In your classroom you will find something you can smell with your nose and glue it to your paper.
7.  Have your teacher label under each picture or object what the sense was.
8.  Turn in your completed paper with all of the five senses on it to your teacher to display your work on the wall.

Estimated Time for Step Two:
35 minutes

Step Three
Closure:
Have students discuss their mission project what some of their objects could be and information they found on the Internet about the five senses.  Tell students that your topicquest page is on the Internet and they can visit the website at school or home to learn more about the five senses.  Explain to students that you are going to put their art work on the Internet and they will be able to share their mission projects with their friends and family.  (If possible teacher should take brief notes during the lesson and concluding discussions to be added later to the assessment and reflections in lesson plan.)

Estimated Time for Step Three:
5 minutes

Assessment:
A. Technology Integration
Student will be assessed through observation while using the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.
Satisfactory: Student is able to use the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.
Unsatisfactory: Student is not able to use the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.

Accommodation:
Links for Accommodations for Special Students
1. Select one of your students that needs special attention.  Describe the student in your class with special needs. (Do not use the student's real name.  You could refer to the student as "the special student.")  Describe your student and his or her needs.

The student in my class has a speech and language disability.  He has a hard time pronouncing things correctly and forming the words he speaks appropriately.  He speaks very quickly and does not annunciate either.

2. Explain what you would add to this lesson plan to accommodate your special student?  Explain what you would add to this lesson to accommodate your special student.

In this lesson plan I could help my student focus on the words we use to decribe the five senses making sure each were practiced and pronounced slwoly and as accurately as possible.  This will continue to build his speech and allow for more instances where his pronounciations are correct.

Reflections: (For Electronic Portfolio Standard #1 Knowledge of Subject Matter)
1. a. Describe and give examples of how your TopicQuest lesson created learning experiences and activities that made subject matter meaningful for your students.

This TopicQuest about the Five Senses really helped bring the real world into the class and help the students associate things in their everyday lives with the five senses.  They were also able to use these real life tangible objects to create a product that can help them relate objects to their senses.

    b. Describe and give examples of how your TopicQuest lesson illustrated your understanding of content and tools of inquiry.

My understanding of this topic was illustared through my familiarity with the computer and websites that we looked at together to learn about the senses.  I was abale to answer questions that the students had very thoroughly and help them understand about the senses.

    c. Describe and give examples of how students were engaged in learning and responded during your lesson.

The students in volved in my lesson about the five senses were very interested in the final project we did and in the colorful websites that we looked at.  They asked many questions that showed me they were interested in this topic and wanted to learn more about it.

  2. Describe and give examples of how the students achieved the assessment of your lesson. Give the achievement level (satisfactory or unsatisfactory) for each assessment for each of your students.

The students were able to place the cracker, bell, flower, sun, and cotton ball in the correct places on the paper showing that they understood the function of each of the sesnes and that they could relate it to tangible objects in their own classroom.

  A. Technology Integration:
Student assessed through observation while using the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.
Student One: Alphonso-Willing to click on links when directed and could contol the mouse very well.
Student Two: Audrianna-Enjoyed pointing to the screen and comenting on the vibrant pictures and flaching words.

3. Describe what you would do differently and why if you taught this lesson again.
If I were teaching this lesson again i may try to find severla different objects that could apply to each of the senses to help give the kids a larger view of what all each sense can actually do.
