Doug Farwell
Trombone
Doug Farwell is Professor of Trombone at Valdosta State University. He also serves as chair of the brass and music technology areas. He holds a DMA from the University of Illinois, MM from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, and BM from the North Carolina School of the Arts. He has taught on the faculty at VSU, University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music, Eastern Illinois University, and has held Graduate Teaching Assistantships at the University of Illinois and SUNY Stony Brook.
He regularly performs with the Continental Trombone Quartet, a professional quartet that has appeared at multiple regional and International conferences with performances around the World. Recent performances include, ITF Beijing, China and the ITF Brasilia-Brazil. CTQ has also performed in Madrid, Spain, Puebla, Mexico, Quebec City, Canada, national and regional CMS conferences in Texas, Pennsylvania and Missouri, 2005 Midwest Band and Orchestra clinic in Chicago, 2005 IAJE International conference in Long Beach California and the 2004 Eastern Trombone Workshop in Washington DC.
In the fall of 2008, CTQ will release "Tabacon" on CD which features many original new compositions written for CTQ and performed over the past few years. All compositions will also be available for purchase through Pebblehill Music.

As a Getzen/Artist clinician, he performs recitals and clinics across the US. Dr. Farwell has served as musical director for the Georgia Peach State Summer Theatre including: Beauty and the Beast, Gypsy, Sweeney Todd, A Funny thing happened on the way to the forum and Crazy for You. He also conducts the VSU trombone choir. He is principal trombone with the Valdosta and Albany Symphony Orchestras and performed Milhaud's Concerto d'hiver in October of 2005 with the Albany Symphony and the Ewazen Concerto as soloist with the Valdosta Symphony in October of 2006. He performs with other regional orchestras and is a member of the VSU Faculty Brass Quintet and Faculty Jazz Combo. As coordinator of the music technology area, Dr. Farwell teaches computer music courses and he designed the current music technology lab along with additional multimedia classrooms.
In addition to regional performances, Dr. Farwell has previously performed for IAJE Conference in Atlanta with the Georgia All-Star Director’s Big Band and appears with that group annually at the GMEA convention in Savannah, GA. Additional International appearances include various International Trombone Festivals over the past several years, the Prague Spring International Trombone Solo Competition (quarter-finalist), North Sea & Montreux Jazz Festivals, La Festival De Lanaudière with the Illinois Trombone Choir and performances at national and regional CMS conferences with CTQ around the US. In the spring of 2003, he presented a paper for the 10th annual Technology Directions in Music Learning Conference in San Antonio. The previous fall he gave a performance/lecture recital as part of the National CMS conference on Music and Technology in Santa Fe, NM. He is a member of the 2005 Who’s Who in American Education and was also selected into the 2004-2005 Empire Who’s Who of Executives and Professionals and appeared in the 2004 58th Edition of Who’s Who in America.
Dr. Farwell has performed in over 23 professional orchestras in nine different states and has also performed with numerous chamber and jazz/commercial ensembles. A few of those groups include: Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra; Ed Barr Big Band; Jack Heard Big Band; Georgia All-Star Director’s Big Band; Ice Capades; P.T.L Show at Heritage U.S.A.; Ron Rudkin Big Band and NCSA Combo; N.C School of the Arts Big Band; University of Texas Arlington Jazz Band.

In the summer of 2000 he performed with an alumni jazz combo from the North Carolina School of the Arts at the Roanoke Summer Music Festival. For two summers, he served as the brass instructor for the Georgia Governor's Honors Program.
Dr. Farwell is currently an artist/clinician for Getzen Trombones. He has chosen to play Getzen trombones for their outstanding quality, great slides and flexibility-needed for the variety of groups he performs with on a regular basis. Dr. Farwell performs on the 3047AF and 3047AFR for orchestra, solo recitals and master-classes, and with the VSU Faculty Brass Quintet. He also plays the new Getzen Custom Series 3508 with the Jazz Combo and any Big Band or show gigs. He also plays bass trombone when needed using the 3062AF. He also currently plays on an Edwards alto. Dr. Farwell also recently became a artist/clinician for Griego Mouthpieces and plays the New York 4.5 and New York 7.
