both writes and illustrates his stories after extensive research. He employs
the traditional folktale style to his stories. He uses sophisticated illustrations
using a cut-paper technique. THe pictures were first drawn out in pencil
and then drawn with a technical pen on tracing paper. Each portion was
transfered with carbon paper and cut out with an X-Acto blade. He used
over 1000 blades while illustrating this book. He won a Caldecott medal
for his book Golem.
One
of the predominate themes in his work is the triumph of an individual faced
with overwhelming odds. The battles are usually against the forces of nature,
the evil of his fellow man, or the power of fate. His stories often contain
messages about mercy and kindness or the triumph of the small and powerless
