Valdosta State University

Hi, my name is Cameron Jahnke. I am nineteen years old and currently a freshman at Valdosta State University. I live in a small town called Thomasville, which is about forty five minutes away from Valdosta State University. There, I live with my mom and dad and have two older sisters named Kortney and Nichole. I enjoy being outdoors hunting, going to the lake, spending time with my friends and family, and going to the beach.

At Valdosta State University, I have decided that I am going to major in Biology so that I can go onto dentistry school after graduating with a Biology degree. In order to pursue a career as a dentist, I will attend Valdosta State University for four years, then go onto dental school, hopefully at Medical College of Georgia. At Medical College of Georgia, I will be required to complete four additional years to become certified in the state of Georgia to practice dentistry. I chose to attend Valdosta State University for many reasons. One, it was home away from home considering I only live about forty five minutes away. I also chose it because it was small enough to get a quality education, but still offer the college experience.

The Freshman Year Experience Program

Your freshman year experience at Valdosta State University is critical in laying the groundwork for a successful academic and professional career. Employers view a well rounded successful academic career as evidence that students can be equally successful and productive in their chosen fields. Success begins by mastering the three principal tasks of the first year student:

  • Academic Skills Development

  • Adjusting to College Life

  • Developing Academic & Career Goals

VSU’s Freshman Year Experience (FYE) is an outstanding student development program that assists first-year students in accomplishing these tasks.  The program is designed primarily for students who have not yet decided on an academic major.

The Freshman Year Experience overall has done many things for me. First and foremost, FYE helped make my transition into college a positive experience by allowing me to meet new people, become involved in the community, and has overall shaped me into a more well rounded person. I would strongly recommend that all freshman coming into Valdosta State University take FYE. It has been the best decision I have made at college, and I will never regret it!
