Comprehension
ELA1R6: The student gains meaning from orallly presented
text.
a. The student listens to and reads a variety of literary and
informational texts and materials to gain knowledge and for pleasure.
Materials and Equipment:
1. Have example of your mission project to show students
2. Paper for drawing
3. Crayons
4. Pencil & paper (to make notes for lesson plan assessment and
reflections)
5. Modification of a lesson developed by Dr. Diane L. Judd
Technology Connection:
Technologies that will be used in this lesson include:
Procedures:
Step One:
Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer. Explain to
students that you are going to use the computer to find out information
about reptiles.
List 2 or more
questions that introduce students
to your TopicQuest that establish a
connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them:
1. "Have
you ever studied or read a book about reptiles?"
2. "Can you tell
me something
that you know about reptiles?"
Today we are going
to learn about reptiles
by visiting websites on the Internet and we will do a fun activity.
I have made a special Web
page for your
class. (During discussion have students turn around away from the
computer to interact.)
Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes
Step Two
Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Have students sit at the computer where they can control the mouse
and computer.) (Explain to students the process of the
lesson.) After we visit
several websites about dinosaurs
then you will pretend to be a reporter for the National Weekly Reader
and draw a picture tell some interesting things about dinosaurs.
Check for understanding
Have students explore and discuss
the information in each of the 3 pre-selected websites. Ask
students guiding
questions about the important concepts in each of the visited
websites. List three or more questions.
1. Where do you think reptiles
live?
2. Can you names some
animals that may be reptiles?
3. Do all reptiles lay eggs?
Practice and feedback related to the
PLO
Read mission project to students. Explain to students that they
are going on a hike in The Okefenokee Swanp.
We are going to view websites that will describe several reptiles. Tell
the
students that the information that they will need to complete
their
mission project is listed and connected in the mission
activity.
Visit website for information for mission project, "Ravaging
Reptiles". Discuss the
information in the linked website in
the mission activity with the students to emphasize
interesting and important information students will need to complete
mission
project.
[Students will write (or dictate to teacher) information to be included with the picture for the mission
project.
While
students are completing mission project, teacher
will observe students and give assistance when needed.]
hike at The Okefenokee Swamp looking for different types of reptiles. This place is packed with reptiles. We don't want to disturb nature, so be very quiet. You need to describe at least three reptiles you saw on your hike. You need to explain and draw what they are doing and what they look like. You could draw these reptiles showing characteristics that are found among reptiles. Use your imagination to describe and draw the animals as best you can. If you need a little help, you should revisit some of the links. A very helpful link that you may want to go back to is theYahooligans Website. You are able to learn all about different types of reptiles. Good luck on your hike! Mission Steps
Step1: We will
explore the links and you will pick out three reptiles they are
interested in. Paying close attention in how they are described and
important details to better draw the reptiles.Step2: After we have explored several sites, we can go back to revisit and reveiw. You will be able to identify the common componets of some repitiles. Step3: You should be able to draw your picture with at least three reptiles. You need to be able to explain and write two or three interesting characteristics about your reptiles. Step4: Share your picture with the teacher and other students. |
Step Three
Closure:
Have students discuss their mission project of their pictures and
information they found on the Internet about reptiles.
Tell students that your topicquest page is on the Internet and they can
visit the website at school or home. Explain to students
that you are going to put their pictures
on the Internet and they will be able to share their mission
projects with
their friends and family. (If possible teacher should take
brief
notes during the lesson and concluding discussions to be added
later
to the assessment and reflections in lesson plan.)
Estimated Time for Step Three:
5 minutes
Assessment:
A. Technology Integration
Student will be assessed through observation while using the computer
with teacher
guidance to do research on the Internet for topic information.

clicking on the correct spots. By the end of the activity, she was able

Student will be assessed through observation and oral discussion to
evaluate if student with teacher guidance is able to listen to

Accommodation:
Links
for Accommodations for Special Students
1. Select one of your students that needs special
attention. Describe the student in your class with special needs.
(Do not use the student's real name. You could refer to the
student
as "the special student."). Sally was easily distracted by irrelevent
sights and sounds. She failed to pay attention to details and made
careless mistakes on assignments.
2. Explain what you would add to this lesson plan to accommodate your special student? Explain what you would add to this lesson to accommodate your special student. Children with ADD need consistent rules that they can understand and follow, give the student small rewards. (ex. let child play a game on the computer when lesson is complete)
Comments & Reflections: For Electronic Portfolio Principle
#1 Content and Curriculum: Teachers demonstrate a strong content
knowledge of content area(s). Describe how your
TopicQuest project is evidence that shows how you understand concepts
of knowledge. Also tell how you used the tools of inquiry to
develop and implement your TopicQuest for your elementary students in
your field classroom
1. Describe how you
developed the mini-reserach TopicQuest lesson for your students.
Include your process of researching and selecting web sites for your
pre-k/elementary students.
First, I did a search on the internet for reptiles. Second, I evaluated
the website to make sure the site was age appropriate, valid, and
interesting.
2. Comment
on your
teaching of how your
TopicQuest lesson created learning experiences and activities that
implemented the use a variety of resources and technologies.
For resources, I used a variety of websites in my mission. For
technolgy, the children used the computer with my guided assistance.
4. Examine and describe your
teaching of this TopicQuest lesson.
I enjoyed teaching the TopicQuest lesson plan, and watching the
children figure out the computer. When they were done with the lesson,
it was interesting to see that they had actually learned
something from my website
5. Give at least on suggestion that
would lead to improving your teaching practices and student
achievement.
I would check the websites for any technical difficulties that would
not allow the students to view a website. I would also allow the
students more time to explore the information on the pages. I
would choose some different websites that the students would be able to
read by themselves.

mother is protecting her child. You are not suppose to get near a
gator , they will eat you. A crocodile has hard skin and likes the
water. |
This
is a picture by Eli, age 6. He said that reptiles liked water. He
said the snake was his favorite reptile. They eat rats and smell with
