Technology Connection:
Technologies that will be used in this lesson include:

Procedures:
Step One: Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer.  Explain to students that you are going to use the computer to find out information about dinosaurs.  List 2 or more questions that introduce students to topic of dinosaurs that establish a connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them: "Have you ever studied or read a book about Thanksgiving?"  "Can you tell me something that you know about Thanksgiving?"   Today we are going to learn about Thanksgiving by visiting web sites on the Internet and we will do a fun activity to learn more about dinosaurs.  I have made a special Thanksgiving page for your class.  (During discussion have students turn around away from the computer to interact.)

Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes

Step Two Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Have students sit at the computer where they can control the mouse and computer.)  (Explain to students the process of the lesson.)  After we visit several web sites about

Check for understanding
Have students explore and discuss the information in each of the 3 pre-selected web sites.  Ask students guiding questions about the important concepts in each of the visited web sites.  (Save "Facts about turkeys" web site to use in Mission Project.)  List three or more questions.
1. What are some of the foods eaten at the first Thanksgiving meal?
2. Can you name one of the passengers on the boat?
3. Can you name one part of the boat you learned about?

Practice and feedback related to the PLO
Read mission project to students.  Explain to students that they are going to be going hunting for the Thanksgiving turkey this year.  Discuss with the students that in order to get a turkey they will need to draw a map of were to find a turkey, the kind of foods a turkey might eat, and need to know what a turkey looks like. Tell the students that the information that they will need to complete their mission project is listed and connected in the  mission activity.  Visit web site for information for mission project, "A feast with the Indians."  Discuss the information in the linked web site in the mission activity with the students to emphasize interesting and important information students will need to complete mission project.

[Students will write (or dictate to teacher) information to be included drawings or short sentences for the mission project.  While students are completing mission project, teacher will observe students and give assistance when needed.]

Mission Activity

There are no grocery stores because the year is 1634. This year you're finally old enough to go hunting and get the turkey yourself. Unfortunately you know nothing about turkey hunting and the turkey feast is depending upon you finding it. So now you must draw a map of where you might find a turkey. You also need to find out what a turkey looks like so you need to do research and draw a picture of the kind of turkey you're going to look for. Remember you might also want to find out what kind of food a turkey eats so the capture will be easier. Good Luck on your hunt!

Mission Steps

  1. Explore the web sites above but focus on facts about turkeys.
  1. Students will learn where a turkey might live in the forest and draw a map to the location.
  1. Next the students will draw a picture of what a wild turkey looks like.
  1. Last the students may draw or write a few short sentences of the kind of foods they will bring along to trap the turkey.
  1. Afterwards discuss the maps with the children and find out what they learned about turkeys.

Estimated Time for Step Two:
35 minutes

Step Three
Closure:
Have students discuss their mission project of pictures and information they found on the Internet about turkeys.  Tell students that your topicquest page is on the Internet and they can visit the web site at school or home to learn more about Thanksgiving.  Explain to students that you are going to put their pictures on the Internet and they will be able to share their mission projects with their friends and family.  (If possible teacher should take brief notes during the lesson and concluding discussions to be added later to the assessment and reflections in lesson plan.)

Estimated Time for Step Three:
5 minutes

Assessment:
A. Technology Integration
Student will be assessed through observation while using the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.
Satisfactory: This student did a excellent job using the computer and doing the research. Her pictures where very detailed. She did an overall excellent job.
Satisfactory: The student excelled in the area of fine motor skills. He worked the mouse well, was very inquisitive and drew some interesting pictures.

Accommodation:
Links for Accommodations for Special Students
1. Select one of your students that has special needs from the conceptual factor information of your practicum class.  Describe the student in your class with special needs in two or more sentences.. (Do not use the student's real name.  You could refer to the student as "the special student.")  There was a student in my classroom who had a awful behavioral problem. The behavioral problem was accompanied by a muscular disorder. The child looked like a normal child and was able to participate  in all activities. The muscular disorder was not fully developed.

2. Explain what you would add or change in this lesson plan to accommodate your special student?

Provide the  student with more detailed  instructions and  be more attentive to the child.

I would also use  positive praise to reinforce good behavior.

Reflections: (For Electronic Portfolio Standard #1 Knowledge of Subject Matter)
1. a. Describe and give examples of how your TopicQuest lesson created learning experiences and activities that made subject matter meaningful for your students.
The children learned about turkeys, Thanksgiving, and some of the many traditions associated with the holiday. This sparked the children's interest because Thanksgiving was right around the corner.

    b. Describe and give examples of how your TopicQuest lesson illustrated your understanding of content and tools of inquiry.
For me to do this lesson, I had to know the content myself. The children taught me a lot because they were so inquisitive we had to do some more research to answer their questions. This really helped me to realize that I always need to be prepared.

    c. Describe and give examples of how students were engaged in learning and responded during your lesson.
The children really liked the lesson. They seemed to understand the material taught and had a lot of fun using the computer.

<>  2. Describe and give examples of how the students achieved the assessment of your lesson. Give the achievement level (satisfactory or unsatisfactory) for each assessment for each of your students.
    A. Technology Integration:
Student assessed through observation while using the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.
Student One: Satisfactory:  This student did a very good job on assessment and did a very good job on her picture.
Student One: Satisfactory:  This student really did a fantastic job working on computer but wanted to be the only one to work the computer. He got carried away everything he did including his picture but he still did a nice job. <>

3. Describe what you would do differently and why if you taught this lesson again.

When I taught the lesson sat beside one student and I did not have good contact with the other. Next time I will sit between the students or stand up behind them.

(Three or more sentences of students' descriptions & comments)

This kindergartner did a good job. She drew her turkey using her hand. Her turkey was very detailed with an eye and a waddle. She baited her turkey with berries and leaves. The brown box is her house. She said she would hunt for the turkey behind her house.

(Three or more sentences of students' descriptions & comments)

This is a picture by a kindergartner.  He said  he was going to bait his turkey good, and he did. Those are acorns all over the page. His turkey is on the bottom with a red waddle. He did an excellent job with detail.
