2005
General
exam information
The problems are contributed by VSU faculty, some are common or old problems whose sources cannot be traced, some are original, and some have been taken or adapted from well known sources such as Teaching Mathematics in the Middle School, Mathematics Teacher, and AHSME.
The exam is meant to be quite
challenging, enough to eliminate the possibility of a large group of
competitors all tied with a perfect score – it may be good to
prepare students with this information beforehand. A predetermined
tie-breaking mechanism is set before each exam.
Many of the problems require
basic non-technical pre-algebra, algebra and geometry, but some function based precalculus and trigonometry is assumed. No problem will
require calculus.
