SS1H1 The student will read about and describe the life of historical figures in American history.
a) identify the contributions made by these figures: Benjamin Franklin (inventor/author/statesman); Thomas Jefferson (Declaration of Independence); Meriwether Lewis and William Clark with Sacawegea (Exploration); Harriet Tubman (Underground Railroad); Theodore Roosevelt (National Parks and the evironment); George Washington Carver (science).

1. Ben Franklin Web site
This website is all about Benjamin Franklin.  It gives a quick glimpse into all of the jobs that he held.  He was much more than just and inventor.


2. Thomas Jefferson Web site
Thomas Jefferson wanted to be known as the author of the Declaration of Independence. This web site tells that he only wanted to be known for three things: author of Declaration of Independence, Statute of Religious Freedom, and the Father of the University of Virginia.

3. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark Web site
This web site gives information about the expedition of Lewis and Clark. At the bottom of this web site, there are some neat stories about the adventures of Lewis and Clark.

4. Harriet Tubman
This web site gives a short biography of Harriet Tubman.  She was one of the most well known Underground Railroad "conductors".

5.Theodore Roosevelt

This site talks all about the life of Teddy Roosevelt and everything that he accomplished.

6. George Washington Carver
George Washington Carver was a great man. He gave up a great job to keep researching things for his countrymen.  Carver was an agricultural chemist.

5.3 TopicActivities

1. Make Convection Currents!-The students will fill a clear plastic container about the size of a shoebox with water until it is 2/3's full. Letter the water sit until it is completely still. The students will add two drops of red food coloring at one end. Next, the students will add an ice cube made with blue food coloring added to water. The students will then see how convection works. THe blue water will separate from the red water.
2. The students will learn about convention. Ben Franklin studied convection.
3. Science is the content area that will be used for this activity. Language arts will be used as they describe what happens.
4. The students will fill their shoebox size plastic container with water until it is 2/3's full. Let the water become still. Then the students will add two drops of red food coloring at one end. On the other end they will place an ice cube that is made from water with blue food coloring in it. The students will see the two colors separate until the red warm water rise and the blue cold water sink. They will then discuss the way the water splits.
5. The students will describe what they saw on an index card.


1. Stories about Lewis and Clark's Adventures!-The students will go to the Lewis and Clark web site and read stories from their expeditions.
2. The students will learn about the adventures of Lewis and Clark and the history behind the people that discovered parts of America.
3. Social Studies and Language Arts
4. The students will enter the Lewis and Clark web site. They will read the stories that are provided at the bottom of the web site. After they read the stories, the students will pair up and share a story that they read on the web site.
5. The students will share their new knowledge with the class.

1. George Washington Carver and Peanut Butter!-The students will go to a web site about Carver and read about Peanut Butter.
2. The students will read about peanut butter and use the recipe that the web site gives to make peanut butter.
3. Social Studies and Arts
4. The students will read the history of peanut butter and then they will use the recipe that is given by the web site to produce their own peanut butter.
5. The students will gain knowledge about George Washington Carver and they will use this knowledge to understand how great inventors are.

Explain how the software can be used with this topic to enhance learning. The students can use this software to tell the stories that they read about Lewis and Clark.
Evaluate the software. What problems can one anticipate when using this program. This program is fairly simple. The students may take a little longer if they do not know how to type. They should still be able to type their response. The students should have an extended period of time to type.

The students will use the program called Paint.  After the students read about Ben Franklin, they will see that he held many jobs. He was not only an inventor, he did many things during his life. They will use Paint to produce artwork that describes one of the things that Ben Franklin did during his life.
This is another simple software program. The students may not be able to produce the perfect picture, but they should be able to draw a picture using Paint that is recognizable.

The students can work as a class with the help of  the teacher to produce a PowerPoint presentation about Harriet Tubman. The presentation can be made so that it shows what Harriet Tubman did during her life. It can include her time as a helper to the Underground Railroad.
PowerPoint can be difficult for children. This is why the teacher will work with the students to make the PowerPoint. The PowerPoint will be done by the entire class. Every child will help because it will be easier to do this than to have every student do an individual PowerPoint.

This software is the same as all the other Nordic Software programs. It is simple and easy to use. Once you have it on your computer, you open it up and pick which puzzle or game you would like to complete.
