1. | What is the Georgia Communication Association? The Georgia Communication Association (the Association) is an academic/professional/student association whose mission is to foster interest in the arts and sciences of the academic discipline and professional field of communication. The Association supports its members in their quest to study the needs of communication education in Georgia, to provide opportunities in communication education for Georgia youth, to develop closer ties to and relationships with professionals in business and industry in the State and region, and to assist in the efforts to raise the standards of communication knowledge, quality, and education in Georgia. A corollary purpose is to engender a spirit of collegiality and friendliness among present and future communication professionals and those from other disciplines and career fields with an interest in communication.
2. | Is GCA affiliated with the National Communication Association? The Association is affiliated with the National Communication Association. The President of the Association represents the Association at the States Advisory Council of the National Communication Association.
3. | Who can join? Regular membership in the Association is open to professional educators in the communication field at any level of education and to those from other fields with an interest in communication. Student membership in the Association is open to students studying or interested in the field of communication.
4. | Why should I join? If you have an interest in learning about the field of communication or sharing your knowledge of the field with like-minded academics, professionals, and students, the Association offers members the opportunity to discuss their interests face-to-face at the annual convention or to network with each other during the year. The Association’s Membership Directory provides contact information, research interests, and teaching interests for all Association members. Association membership can facilitate joint teaching and/or research projects between members and their various institutions, and members willingly provide considerable support to those new to the field. Association membership also entitles you to the Proceedings, the Association’s journal of convention presentations submitted and accepted for publication. The Proceedings presents articles focusing on both pedagogy and theoretical scholarship.
5. | How do I become a member? If you are on the Association’s mailing list, you may join by completing and returning the Membership Application included in the convention packet. If you are not on our mailing list, you may join the Association by printing out the membership application from our website located at http://www.valdosta.edu/comarts/GCAA.html. Return the completed application with appropriate payment to the Executive Director at the address indicated on the Membership Application form. Receipts for all fees are sent promptly via e-mail by the Executive Director.
6. | What is the cost of joining? There are three levels of Association dues. Those wishing to be Patrons pay $25, a portion of which is used to subsidize student participation in the annual convention. Regular members pay $15, and students wishing to become members pay $10. Students, however, may present at and attend conventions without becoming members. All members receive the Proceedings and Membership Directory. According to the Association’s Constitution, however, student members may neither hold office nor vote.
7. | When does the GCA meet? The Association’s annual convention is typically held in mid-February.
8. | How can I receive information about the convention? The Association provides convention information to current members and to an extensive mailing list of academics, professionals, and students. To be added to the Association’s mailing list, please provide your name, address, and e-mail information to the Executive Director. In addition, you may request Association and convention materials directly from the Executive Director.
9. | How do I register for the convention? If you are a current member or are on the Association’s mailing list, simply complete the Registration/Membership form sent out in mid-November and return it as directed with appropriate fees. If you do not receive convention information, contact the Executive Director and a Registration/Membership form can be e-mailed to you.
10. | What is the cost of registration? Early registration (before January 15th) is $20 for members and $30 for non-members. Regular registration (after January 15th) is $30 for members and $40 for non-members. Students may register for the convention without cost at any time. Student presenters are strongly encouraged to register early to facilitate convention planning.
11. | Who can present at the convention? Students, faculty, and professionals in communication and related disciplines are welcome to present at the convention.
12. | When is the call for proposals sent out? An initial call for proposals is sent out in early May, and a final call is sent out on or before September 1st.
13. | How do I submit a proposal? Proposals must be submitted in compliance with the call instructions. These may vary somewhat from year to year due to planning constraints. To resolve questions about submissions in any given year, please contact the Association’s Vice President.
14. | How can I be published in the Proceedings? To be published in the Proceedings following the presentation of your work at the convention, submit your work to the Proceedings editor in hard-copy form, on a diskette as a Microsoft® Word document, and as an e-mail attachment.
15. | What is the required format for publication? The Proceedings articles follow APA style, latest edition, as modified by the editor. Presenters will be sent a summary of the modifications after they are selected for presentation at the convention.
16. | Are students able to participate? Students can and do participate in our conventions, as presenters, convention workers, and attendees. Their participation is highly valued and encouraged by the Association.
17. | Do students have to register for the convention and join the GCA? Student presenters are strongly encouraged to register early to facilitate convention planning. Registration fees for student presenters are waived by the Association, and student presenters are not required to join the Association unless they choose to do so. Joining the Association, however, would provide the student with a copy of the Proceedings and Membership Directory. Student workers do not need to register for the convention or become members. Student attendees must register (at the door), but membership is optional.
18. | Are there funds available to assist student presenters? In the past the Association has provided modest financial assistance to student presenters. An application and instructions for filing for this assistance are available on our web site.
19. | How do I contact the Board? Contact information for each member of the Board is available on the Association website located at http://www.valdosta.edu/comarts/officers.html, or you may e-mail the Executive Director for the contact information.
20. | How can I become involved in GCA? The best way to become involved in the Association is to either present at or attend our annual convention and participate in the business meeting in the afternoon of the first day. There you can express your interest in becoming more active in the business of the Association. The Association is always looking for enthusiastic volunteers. If you would like to become active prior to our next convention, please contact the Executive Director or Vice President to see how you can be of assistance.
