Guidelines for Response Papers

1.  Identify the lecturer and the title of his or her presentation.  Or identify the title
     of the video critiqued.

        (Example:  "A History of African American Music" by Dr. Bobby Blake)
 

2.  Summarize the thesis of the presentation  or video as well as the important points
     of discussion. (Be sure to respond  to your  impression of the term "black" or
     "blackness" in the Riggs' documentary).
 

3.  Evaluate the success of the video or lecture.   Did it help you better understand
     and achieve the course objectives (or some of them) as they are outlined in the
     course syllabus?

4.  Would you keep this video as a part of the course material?   How essential is
     this lecture topic to the course?

Technical Stuff
 

1.  Your response paper should be at least a two page, double-spaced typed summary
     of the video or the lecture.  You may extend it to four pages, but no more.
 

2.  Your first response paper is due Monday, September 10, 2001 at  1:00 PM.
     Do not miss class if you have not completed the  assignment.

       You are to critique the following film:

3.  Your second response paper is due Monday, October 9, 2001. You will response
     to one of these professors' lectures:

             DR. MATTHEW RICHARD -- "AFRICA THROUGH THE EYES OF AN
                                                                  ANTHROPOLOGIST"

             DR. OKETE SHIROYA -- "AFRICA, PAST AND PRESENT"

             DR. DAVID WILLIAMS -- "AFRICAN AMERICANS IN THE OLD
                                                            SOUTH AND IN THE CIVIL WAR”
 

4.  Your third response paper is due Monday, October 22, 2001 at 1:00 PM.
     You will critique one of these professors' lectures or the film:
 

             Dr. Mary Willis -- "African Americans and Higher Education"
             Dr. William Harris – “African American Literature”
             Mr. Jewrell Rivers – “Spiritual Heritage of African Americans”
             Frederick Douglass: "When the Lion Wrote History"
 

5.  Your fourth critique is due Monday, November 12, 2001 at 1:00 PM.
     You will critique one of these professors' lectures.

            Dr. Joyce Davis -- "A History of African American Art"

            Dr. John Gaston -- "Black Males and Popular Culture"

            Ms. Deborah Morgan – “African American Theater”
 

6.   Please make an appointment with me if you need to discuss the
      assignment further or need additional help.
