Dance Club at ACDF, FSU 2006
Founded by VSU dancers in the Fall 2003, the VSU Repertory Dance Club provides dance program support and community outreach in dance. Activities include educational field trips, master classes, community teaching opportunities, fund raising, outreach, and creative venues for students. This includes annual participation and support for student attendance and adjudication or informal performances at the American College Dance Festival and GAHPERD conferences. Each spring, Dance Club members teach dance to children for VSU's Continuing Education SCOPE program and offer a series of master classes at the college. The Dance Club also supports Health and Wellness activities in the community. Membership is open to any student interested in dance appreciation or in preparing for a career in dance. Associate Professor, Catherine Schaeffer serves as faculty advisor to the club.
This
year, Dance Club activities included, travel to see professional dance concerts,
participation in the American College Dance Festival, community service through
wellness yoga demonstrations, outreach performances and master classes, designing and selling of dance T-shirts, working at Wild Adventures Theme Park/Phobia
and other fund raising fun.
Our goals next year are to set up a larger dance outreach tour and to
continue teaching quality dance classes in the community via SCOPE and local
dance studios.
The American College Dance Festival Association is the national college dance organization holding annual festivals throughout the country. The festival offers a vital experience for college dancers to perform, take classes, network with the regional college dance community, and view outstanding choreography by students, faculty and professionals. ACDFA provides a professional touring experience for the VSU dancers and includes opportunities to be adjudicated by a national panel of dance experts. ACDFA is a core experience towards preparing dancers for life in the world of professional dance post graduation. Dancers perform faculty work and present their own choreography annually. Under the supervision of professor Schaeffer, the dancers have traveled to colleges in Miami, Alabama, Kansas, Virginia, Atlanta, and Tallahassee, FL.
