Technology Connection:
Technologies that will be used in this lesson include:

Procedures:
Step One: Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer.  Explain to students that you are going to use the computer to find out information about letters of the alphabet.  List 2 or more questions that introduce students to your TopicQuest that establish a connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them:
1. "Do you know all the letters of the alphabet?
2. "Can you tell me some sounds that letters make?"
Today we are going to learn about letters of the alphabet by visiting websites on the Internet and we will do a fun activity.  I have made a special Web page for your class.  (During discussion have students turn around away from the computer to interact.)

Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes

Step Two Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Have students sit at the computer where they can control the mouse and computer.)  (Explain to students the process of the lesson.)  After we visit several websites about letters of the alphabet, you will pretend to be a writer and make a book using two letters.  It will be designed with many pictures.

Check for understanding
Have students explore and discuss the information in each of the 3 pre-selected websites.  Ask students guiding questions about the important concepts in each of the visited websites.   List three or more questions.
1.  Does every letter make the same sound?
2.
Can you tell me the sound that the letter Bb makes?
3.  Can you think of any words that begin with the letter Bb?

Practice and feedback related to the PLO
Read mission project to students.  Explain to students that they are going to be writers and design a book using two letters of the alphabet.   Tell the students that the information that they will need to complete their mission project is listed and connected in the  mission activity.  Visit website for information for mission project.  Discuss the information in the linked website in the mission activity with the students to emphasize interesting and important information students will need to complete mission project.

[Students will write (or dictate to teacher) information to be included in the book and draw pictures for the mission project.  While students are completing mission project, teacher will observe students and give assistance when needed.]

Mission Activity
Imagine that you are a writer.  You have been asked to put together a book of two alphabet letters.  First, you will need to pick two letters from the alphabet to use in your book.  Think about words that begin with each letter.  Use five pages of your book for one letter and five pages for another letter.  This means you will need at least five words for each letter.  Remember to draw pictures to go with your words.  If you have trouble thinking of words, use the alphabet fun website for help.
 Have fun and good luck!

Mission Activity Steps
1.  Visit each of the websites listed above.
2.  While visiting the websites, begin thinking of two letters you may want to use.
3.  Use the alphabet fun website to help you with ideas for words.
4.  When you return to your desk, you will be given crayons and a book for you to use.
5.  The first five pages will be used for your first letter.
6.  Write the letter at the top of the page and a word that begins with that letter.
7.  Draw a picture to go with each word.
8.  The next five pages will be for your next letter.  Do the same thing to these pages.
9.  When you are finished tell your teacher.
10.  Share your book aloud with the class.

Estimated Time for Step Two:
35 minutes

Step Three
Closure:
Have students discuss their mission project and information they found on the Internet.  Tell students that your topicquest page is on the Internet and they can visit the website at school or home.  Explain to students that you are going to put their pictures and information on the Internet and they will be able to share their mission projects with their friends and family.  (If possible teacher should take brief notes during the lesson and concluding discussions to be added later to the assessment and reflections in lesson plan.)

Estimated Time for Step Three:
5 minutes

Accommodation:
Links for Accommodations for Special Students
1.  In this class we must accomodate for a child with Spina Bifida.  This student is bound to a wheelchair and has trouble moving around.

2. For this lesson the teacher will accommodate the special needs student by making sure that child is able to be mobile.  This student may have trouble getting to a computer; therefore, the use of a laptop computer may work better.  Another method that could be helpful would be to stretch the mouse cord so that it reaches the student.  This way the mouse can be operated by the student.

Assessment the Primary Learning Outcomes
A. Technology Integration
Student will be assessed through observation while using the computer with teacher guidance to do research on the Internet for topic information.

B. English/Language Arts
Student will be assessed through observation and oral discussion to evaluate if student with teacher guidance is able to listen to information to gain knowledge.

Comments & Reflections:

1. Comment on your teaching of how your TopicQuest lesson created learning experiences and activities that implemented the use a variety of resources and technologies.  Several resources were used during this lesson.  Examples include:  websites, alphabet/ phonics cards, a chart with pictures, and ABC booklets.

2. State evidence in two or more sentences to show that your students gained knowledge during your TopicQuest lesson.  The students gained knowledge about both the computer and phonics.  They learned what it means to scroll down and scroll up.  They also learned several words for each letter and practiced making the sounds.

3. Give at least one suggestion that would lead to improving your teaching practices and student achievement.  It might be helpful to have faster technology or have a back-up plan in case the technology was running slow.
