Valdosta State University

Hi, my name is Ben Winter.  I was born here in Valdosta but I was raised in Thomasville, Georgia,

which is about 45 miles west of here.  I am now a freshman here at VSU.  Currently my major is

undecided, and this is one of the reasons why I decided to come to VSU, because I could not decide

where else to go.  I plan on transferring to  UGA soon so that I can begin pursuing a career as a

Veterinarian.

The Freshman Year Experience Program

Your freshman year experience at Valdosta State University is critical in laying the groundwork for a

successful academic and professional career. Employers view a well rounded successful academic career

as evidence that students can be equally successful and productive in their chosen fields. Success begins

by mastering the three principal tasks of the first year student: Academic Skills Development, Adjusting

to College Life, and Developing Academic & Care.  VSU’s Freshman Year Experience (FYE) is an

outstanding student development program that assists first-year students in accomplishing these tasks.  The

program is designed primarily for students who have not yet decided on an academic major.

The FYE program has helped me during my first semester and I believe that it will continue to help

me in my years of secondary education by showing me my skills and my weaknesses.  This has helped me

to study more effectively and how to schedule free time as well.  The only improvements that I feel that

the FYE program should make next quarter is have more classes available so that more freshmen can join

this program.
