When you are finding the
probability of one thing that happens, it is called a simple event. Finding the
probability of a simple event is when you use the formula:
number of outcomes that
can
occur to give you what you are trying to do
number of possible
outcomes.
The picture above shows green, yellow, and blue
marbles. If you
put all of the marbles in a bag and drew one out, we could find the
probability of pulling out each of the colors. Pulling one
marble out is a simple event. If we wanted to know the
probablility of pulling out a green marble, we would count how many
green marbles there are (7), and put that number over the total number
of marbles (22). There is a 7/22 or a 7 out of 22 chance you
would pull out a green marble in a simple event.
