When you are finding the probability of one thing that happens, it is called a simple event.  Finding the probability of a simple event is when you use the formula:
number of outcomes that can occur to give you what you are trying to do
number of possible outcomes.

marbles
reach in bag

The picture above shows green, yellow, and blue marbles.  If you put all of the marbles in a bag and drew one out, we could find the probability of pulling out each of the colors.   Pulling one marble out is a simple event.  If we wanted to know the probablility of pulling out a green marble, we would count how many green marbles there are (7), and put that number over the total number of marbles (22).  There is a 7/22 or a 7 out of 22 chance you would pull out a green marble in a simple event.

Read about this explanation of probability by Dr. Math.  The second section down talks about the probability of selecting marbles.  It should give you a better understanding of a simple event.
