Northern Russia Field Course Itinerary:



We, May 10  Arrive at Atlanta's Hartsfield Int'l Airport in ample time 
	    to assemle with group at 11:30 am;  depart Atlanta for 
	    Moscow 1:40 pm.

Th, May 11  Arrival in Moscow 12 noon, drive N to tourist hotel near 
	    Zvenigorod to spend aft/eve; probably no planned activities 
            other than jet-lag recovery.

Fr, May 12  conduct ecological & botanical excursions at
       	    Zvenigorod Field Station, stay night at same hotel.

Sa, May 13  travel to Chernogolovka Experiment Station, S of Moscow, 
	    stay night at hotel near Moscow.

Su, May 14  travel to "Elk Island" National Park to visit pristine
            deciduous forest, spend day, return to lodging near Moscow.

Mo, May 15  drive to Moscow in morning, tour city till early eve.  
	    Depart Moscow 9 pm on Aeroflot; arrive Syktyvkar 11 pm.

Tu, May 16  Excursions in Syktyvkar (city and natural history museum)

We, May 17  Travel to Vychegda Field Station; begin field studies

Th, May 18  field excursions at Vychegda (ecology, botany, ornithology,
            mammalogy, ichthyology)

Fr, May 19  fieldwork and special projects at Vychegda

Sa, May 20  fieldwork and special projects at Vychegda

Su, May 21  finish fieldwork and special projects at Vychegda; return 
	    to Syktyvkar in afternoon; go to Disco in eve.

Mo, May 22  excursion to area freshwater habitats (lakes, marshes) for
       	    field observations (esp. migratory birds) and sampling.

Tu, May 23  meet with faculty and students at SSU science departments,
       	    tour University, and University Science Museum; evening
       	    departure to Troitsko-Pechorsk by train.

We, May 24  arrive Troitsko-Pechorsk, continue by car to Jaksha

Th, May 25  visit pristine pine forests of the Pechora-Ilych Preserve 
            for botanical and ornithological excursions (and possibly
	    visit Yougyd-Va National Park, if conditions allow). 

Fr, May 26  Visit with Pechora-Ilych preserve administrators at Jaksha
       	    village and discuss post-fire forest ecology; visit elk farm.

Sa, May 27  Continue forest ecology study at Pechora-Ilych Preserve
       	    and include mammal/bird study in and around area lakes &
       	    rivers (possibly by boat).

Su, May 28  dep. for Syktyvkar by train.  Group discussions, work on
            journals while en route.

Mo, May 29  arr. Syktyvkar morning; breakfast, lunch.  Flight departs 
	    for St. Petersburg ca. 2 pm.

Tu, May 30  Excursions in St. Petersburg (historic buildings, museums..)
	  to We, May 31  

Th, June 1  return flight to Atlanta dep. 12:30 pm, arr. 10 pm Atlanta
