This rodent is about a foot long (head + body), with a 1.5-ft tail and weighs 600-700 gms. Tentatively identified as Dactylomus dactylinus, or Amazon bamboo rat, largest member (and one of the "soft-furred" members) of the Neotropical rodent family, Echimyidae, the spiny rats. Photographed in a private backyard in Douglas, Coffee Co., GA in early November 2002.
