Types of Chemical Reactions

There are 5 types of chemical equations:
SYNTHESIS
, DECOMPOSITION, SINGLE REPLACEMENT, DOUBLE REPLACEMENT, & COMBUSTION

How are they different?
LET'S LEARN!!

1) SYNTHESIS REACTION
In a synthesis reaction two or more simple substances combine to form a more complex substance.  **Two (or more) reactants yield one product**

                                                                                                              EXAMPLE
Example

This video shows the reaction between Sodium (Na) and Chlorine (Cl)

To visualize a synthesis reaction, look at the following cartoon:

Synthesis ReactionThe skinny bird (reactant) and the worm (reactant) combine to make ONE product, a fat bird.

2) DECOMPOSITION REACTION
In a decomposition reaction a more complex substance breaks down into more simple parts.  **One reactant yields two (or more) products**

EXAMPLE
Example
This video shows the decomposition of Ammonium Dichromate
(NH4)2Cr2O7

To visualize a decomposition reaction, look at the following cartoon:

DecompositionThe egg (reactant) has opened and the turtle (product) and egg shell (product) are now two separate substances.
