Technology Connection:
Technologies that will be used in this lesson include:

Procedures:
Step One: Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer.  Explain to students that you are going to use the computer to find out information about dinosuars.  List 2 or more questions that introduce students to topic of dinosaurs that establish a connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them: "Have you ever heard of your five senses?"  "Can you name all five of them?"   Today we are going to learn about our five senses by visiting websites on the Internet and we will do a fun activity to learn more about dinosaurs.  I have made a special five senses page for your class.  (During discussion have students turn around away from the computer to interact.)

Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes

Step Two Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Have students sit at the computer where they can control the mouse and computer.)  (Explain to students the process of the lesson.)  After we visit several websites about the five senses,  you will pretend to be an airline pilot on a very special mission that requires you to use your senses to complete it..

Check for understanding
Have students explore and discuss the information in each of the 3 pre-selected websites.  Ask students guiding questions about the important concepts in each of the visited websites.  (Save "The Five Senses" website to use in Mission Project.)  List three or more questions.
1.  How many senses do you have?
2.  Can you tell me the five senses?
3
What sense are you using to understand what I am saying to you?

Practice and feedback related to the PLO
Read mission project to students.  Explain to students that they are going to be an airline pilot on a top secret mission.  Discuss pilots and what they do.  Show them a picture of an airplane and a cockpit so they can see what they will be using to complete thier mission. Tell the students that the information that they will need to complete their mission project is listed and connected in the  mission activity.  Visit website for information for mission project, "The Five Senses."  Discuss the information in the linked website in the mission activity with the students to emphasize interesting and important information students will need to complete mission project.

[Students will write (or dictate to teacher) each sense they used to complete the different objectives in their mission project.  While students are completing mission project, teacher will observe students and give assistance when needed.]

Mission Activity
santa

Imagine that you are an airplane pilot.  You have a very special flight to complete.  You need to fly to the North Pole to pick up the toys for Santa Claus because his sleigh is broken.  As you prepare to take off, you will need to perform a preflight check in the cockpit to make sure all your systems are ready to go.  What senses will you use to complete this check?  Once you arrive at the North Pole, you may need to put a heavy coat on.  Can you tell me why you might need this, and what sense you used to decide?  After you have loaded all the boys and girls presents onto the plane, Santa will fill your thermos with hot cocoa.  What sense will you use to determine if you like or do not like the cocoa?
Using The Five Senses sight do your preflight check and determine those senses!!

Mission Steps:
Step 1: Ask your teacher for paper and crayons.
Step 2: Draw a picture of your airplane taking off, or at the North Pole with Santa.
Step 3: Write the senses you used to complete your preflight check and tell us what you checked.
Step 4: Write the senses you used at the North Pole to determine if you
needed a coat and if you liked your hot cocoa.
Step 5: Hand your completed drawing to your teacher

Estimated Time for Step Two:
35 minutes

Step Three
Closure:
Have students discuss their mission project of their pictures and information they found on the Internet about the five senses.  Tell students that your topicquest page is on the Internet and they can visit the website at school or home to learn more about the five senses.  Explain to students that you are going to put their pictures on the Internet and they will be able to share their mission projects with their friends and family.  (If possible teacher should take brief notes during the lesson and concluding discussions to be added later to the assessment and reflections in lesson plan.)

Estimated Time for Step Three:
5 minutes

Assessment:
A. Technology Integration
Student will be assessed through observation while using the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.
Satisfactory: Student is able to use the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.
Unsatisfactory: Student is not able to use the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.

Accommodation:
Links for Accommodations for Special Students
1. Select one of your students that needs special attention.  Describe the student in your class with special needs. (Do not use the student's real name.  You could refer to the student as "the special student.")  Describe your student and his or her needs.

2. List the specific URL address of one Internet resource website, where you found information to assist you to work with your special needs student. Information for assisting special students:  Links for Accommodations for Special Students or you can do a search. List the specific URL information for your special student.  Be sure it links.

3. Explain what you would add to this lesson plan to accommodate your special student?  Explain what you would add to this lesson to accommodate your special student.

Reflections: (For Electronic Portfolio Standard #1 Knowledge of Subject Matter)
1. a. Describe and give examples of how your TopicQuest lesson created learning experiences and activities that made subject matter meaningful for your students.

They were able to relate the topic to their everyday lives because they always use their senses all the time. The activity made them think about the senses and really figure when you use each one and how you can use more than one at a time.

    b. Describe and give examples of how your TopicQuest lesson illustrated your understanding of content and tools of inquiry.

This lesson illustrated my understanding by being able to correctly and effectively transfer the knowledge to my sutdents. I know this happened because they were able to recall the information at a later date when the teacher visited the topic again.

    c. Describe and give examples of how students were engaged in learning and responded during your lesson.

The constantly asked questions and related to the material. <>  2. Describe and give examples of how the students achieved the assessment of your lesson. Give the achievement level (satisfactory or unsatisfactory) for each assessment for each of your students.
    A. Technology Integration:
Student assessed through observation while using the computer with teacher guidance to do research and find information for the mission project.
Student One:  Satisfactory- Ethan had little or no difficulty manipulating the mouse to explore the different websites.
Student Two: Satisfactory-Steve had little or no difficulty manipulating the mouse to explore the different websites.

3. Describe what you would do differently and why if you taught this lesson again.
If I taught this lesson again, I would try to lower distractions by making sure there were not other students in the library.  My students handled it very well, but the other students became too interested and lurked around the computers.
