Technology Connection:
Technologies that will be used in this lesson include:

Procedures:
Step One: Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer.  Explain to students that you are going to use the computer to find out information about plants.  List 2 or more questions that introduce students to your TopicQuest that establish a connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them:

1. "Have you ever studied or read a book about plants?"
2. "Can you tell me something that you know about plants?"

Today we are going to learn about plants by visiting websites on the Internet and we will do a fun activity.  I have made a special Web page for your class.  (During discussion have students turn around away from the computer to interact.)

Estimated Time for Step One: 5 minutes

Step Two Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Have students sit at the computer where they can control the mouse and computer.)  (Explain to students the process of the lesson.)  After we visit several websites about plants then you will draw a picture of what you think your garden would look like if you had one.

Check for understanding
Have students explore and discuss the information in each of the 3 pre-selected websites.  Ask students guiding questions about the important concepts in each of the visited websites.   List three or more questions.
1.  What must you do first before your plant can grow?
2.
What three things do plants need to grow?
3.  What type of plants do you eat in your salad?

<>Practice and feedback related to the PLO
Read mission project to students.  Explain to students that they are going to draw a picture of their garden.   Tell the students that the information that they will need to complete their mission project is listed and connected in the mission activity.  Visit website for information for mission project.  Discuss the information in the linked website in the mission activity with the students to emphasize interesting and important information students will need to complete mission project.
[Students will write (or dictate to teacher) information to be included in the articles and draw pictures for the mission project.  While students are completing mission project, teacher will observe students and give assistance when needed.]

Mission Activity

Hurry!!! We need to move fast. April is here and May is on its way. We need to pretend to get our gardens ready so our plants can begin to grow. You just learned about what plants need to live. If you have forgotten you can refer back. But I know that all of you know just what plants need, so let's get started. Let's go to our garden to find out what type of plants we want to grow. Once you have chosen your flowers, I want you to imagine that you are in a garden and you are getting ready to plant your favorite flowers.  Draw a picture of what you think your garden will look like once your plants are full grown. Be sure to label the flowers that you chose as your favorites. Enjoy and happy gardening!!!
Mission Steps

1. Visit the sites above to learn all that you can about plants.

2. Go to the site above about planting your first garden
and choose some flowers that you like best.

3.Once you have thought about your imaginary garden, draw a picture of what your garden looks like.Be sure to label the flowers that you chose as your favorite.

4. When you have finished your drqwing, turn it into your teacher.

5.Thank you for your wonderful help. Your gardens are going to be beautiful.

Estimated Time for Step Three:
5 minutes

1. Attention Deficit Disorder / Attention Hyperactivity Disorder
If there is a student in the class with ADD or ADHD then the teacher might consider doing this lesson one-on-one with the student(s). Teacher needs to be sure
keep good eye contact with the student(s). Be sure to let the student(s) do this lesson hands on. When discussing the lesson, go slow, and give the student(s)
enough time to answer any questions that you might have.

2. With this lesson plan, the teacher might consider using a worksheet for the student(s) to take home and look over it in the future.

Comments & Reflections: For Electronic Portfolio Standard #4 Multiple Instructional Strategies )
1. a.The TopicQuest page that I created for Mrs. Killgo's class was a new way of learning for the students. The students that participated in this activity had not           done much on the internet before. This was a really good way to get their foot in the door and begin to get them familiar with not only the computer but also the        internet.

b.My students learned much new information that had to deal with the topic of plants. They took that information and drew a picture of what a garden consisted           of and what flowers need to live, such as sun and water.

2. a. My students loved this activity. They were focused and interested in what was going to happen next. I think that anytime a student is involved of focused then             they have already begun the critical thinking process. Because when you are interested in something, then you are already thinking ahead about what is going to         happen next.
    b. In the TopicQuest my students learned about the parts of the plants and what they need to survive. In each picture the students have drawn one or two of the             two things that plants need to grow and live. They showed that they knew the parts of the flower, such as the roots, stem, leaves, and flower.Whle they were             drawing their pictures, they had to think hard about the parts of the flower and the things that flowers need to live.

3. I felt that the teaching of this lesson was a huge succcess. My students were focused and interested the entire time. One of the students said that this was fun and     that he/she wanted to do it again. That made me feel really good! It can be difficult to please a kindergartener.

4. I think that my students achieved exactly what they were supposed to. One thing that I might change would be the length of the TopicQuest. I felt that this was         too long for five year olds to sit in front of a computer, going to different websites to try to learn about one subject. I think that three links to the internet would be     better than six.

A kindergartner drew a picture of the flower garden that she pretended to grow. She knew that the flowers needed plenty of sun shine to live. She included a different variety of flowers, the rose being her favorite.

This is a picture by a kindergartner.  She grew flowers, beanstalks, and grapes in her garden. She also drew the sun and rain clouds because she explained that flowers need sun and water to grow. She showed that flowers have roots and that flowers grow upward.
