Materials and Equipment:
1. Have an example of Mini-Research eBook activity to show students
2. Paper for drawing
3. Crayons and/or color markers
4. Pencil & paper (to make notes for lesson plan assessment and reflections)
5. Modification of a  lesson developed by Dr. Diane L. Judd
6. Clipped magazine, newspaper, etc., pictures of everyday objects in the shape of circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles

Procedures:
Step One: Introduction
Have a small group of students go to a computer.  Explain to students that you are going to use the computer to read an Mini-Research eBook about basic geometric shapes.  List 2 or more questions that introduce students to your Mini-Research eBook that will establish a connection to students' prior knowledge by asking them:
1. "Can you tell me what a circle looks like? A square? A triangle? A rectangle?"
2. "What are some things that are circles? Squares? Triangles? Rectangles?"  
Today we are going to read an eBook on the Internet. I have made a special Mini-Research eBook on the Internet for your class.  (During discussion have students turn around away from the computer to interact.)

Estimated Time for Step One:
5 minutes

Step Two Teaching the Primary Learning Outcomes:
(Students will sit at the computer where they can control the mouse and computer.)  (Explain to students the process of the lesson.)  After we read the Mini-Research eBook and visit several websites.

Check for understanding
Students with teacher assistance will read the Mini-Research eBook, explore, and discuss the information in the four linking websites that go with the Mini-Research eBook.  Ask students guiding questions about the important concepts in the Mini-Research eBook and the linking websites.   List four or more questions from each of your linking websites that will guide your students to gain information for your PLO.
1.  What does a circle look like?

  What does a square look like?
3.  What does a triangle look like?
4.  What does a rectangle look like?

Practice and feedback related to the PLO
Read the Mini-Research eBook project to students.  Explain to students that they are going be shape spies, and they will sort trough and group objects that are circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles.  Tell the students that the information that they will need to complete their Mini-Research eBook project is listed and connected in the Mini-Research eBook activity.  Review the information in the linked website in the Mini-Research eBook activity with the students to emphasize interesting and important information students will need to complete mission project.

Real-World Activity: Pretend that you are a shape spy. Your mission is to find as many shapes as you can in your classroom. Look around your classroom and find objects that are circles, squares, triangles, and rectangles. Shapes can be found in everyday objects. If you forget what the shapes look like, you can go back through the eBook to refresh your memory. Remember that you are a spy, so you have to be super sneaky!


Lesson 2 Directions:

  1. Look through the pictures of everyday objects at your table.
  2. On your paper, sort the objects into groups by shape.
  3. Group all of the objects that are circles together.
  4. Group all of the objects that are squares together.
  5. Group all of the objects that are triangles together.
  6. Group all of the objects that are rectangles together.
  7. Paste the objects in their groups onto your paper. Don't forget to write your name on your paper!
  8. Go back to the eBook if you need help remembering what all of the shapes look like.
  9. When you are done, bring your paper to me and we will label the objects with the name of their shape together.

[Students will write (or dictate to teacher) information to be included in their Mini-Research eBook project.  While students are completing Mini-Research eBook project, teacher will observe students and give assistance when needed.]

Closure:
Have students discuss their Mini-Research eBook activity and information they found on the Internet.  Tell students that your Mini-Research eBook Website is on the Internet and they can visit the website at school or home.  Explain to students that you are going to put their pictures and information on the Internet and they will be able to share their mission projects with their friends and family.  (If possible teacher should take brief notes during the lesson and concluding discussions to be added later to the assessment and reflections in lesson plan.)

    My Mini-Research eBook Lesson utilized the classroom computers and the internet. In my eBook a variety of educational links were used. The links went to various educational videos and games on the internet. The students seemed especially engaged with the videos from the Sesame Street collection. Their eyes never left the computer screen!

    All of the students I worked with came to me with difficulty in basic geometric shape recognition. Throughout the lesson, the students were able to point out shapes found in items all around their classroom.  The students all performed at level 3 in the assessment done at the end of my Mini-Research eBook Lesson.

3. Give at least one suggestion that would lead to improving your teaching practices and student achievement.  (* To receive full credit description must include a minimum of two sentences and a detailed example.)

      The area of my teaching practices in which I need the most improvement is my spoken grammar. I need to more closely model Standard English for my students. I find myself lapsing into grammar mishaps such as "gonna" and "y'all" far too often. This is something that I am working very hard to improve.
