Hello
everyone. My name is Avraye Henry, and I am currently a freshman at
Valdosta State University. I am a Mathematics major planning on entering
the field of secondary education. I realized that teaching was a passion
during my senior year in high school when I had the opportunity to
intern at a local middle school as a teacher's assistant. I am
originally from the Bronx, New York, but have lived in Mableton, Georgia,
for seven years. I am the youngest of six children and I am of
Jamaican descent. I chose VSU for my institution of higher education
mainly because of its location. Located right on the border of Georgia
and Florida, the weather is always nice and I do not have to worry about
unbearable winters. In my spare time, I like playing intramural sports,
writing poetry, and spending time with the people I love the most. My
ultimate goal in life is to have an established, steady career by age 23
and to have a wonderful family.

The VSU Honors Program was of
interest to me because I was enrolled in a similar program in high
school which focused on a more in depth curriculum in the areas of
mathematics and medical science. The Honors Program also caught my
attention because of the benefits of being an honors student. As an
honors student, I have the opportunity for priority registration, my
class sizes are smaller which allows for more personal interaction with
my professors that generally is not found in typical freshman courses,
and an opportunity for independent research which leads to a Certificate
in University Honors. As a freshman in the program, I find the program
to be a great benefit to my academic experience and plan to continue in
the program for the remainder of my tenure at VSU.
