Pollution Revolution

PLO
The students will be able to write the days when the air is good to play outside and when it is not so good to play outside according to the color chart on the website Kids Air.

Materials Needed
chart paper
markers

Procedures
Step One: Introduction

Ask students: "What is air pollution?"

Once each child replies, write down his/her response on the chart paper.

Then ask students, "How can we reduce the air pollution on Earth?"

Again, once each child replies, write down his/her response on the chart paper.

Step Two: Teaching the PLO

Explain to students that air pollution is making the environment unclean by human activity such as driving cars or by factories putting bad smoke into the air, etc..

Take the students outside and let them orally present different types of air pollution they can see. Ex: a car driving down the road, etc.

Step Three:

Take children to computer lab to complete activity on Kids Stuff link.

They must click on Kindergarten and First grade activity.

Once into window, ask them to click on each color and find out if the air is good or bad for that color of day.

After completed with all of the colors, ask them to draw on a piece of paper an animal that corresponds to each color.

Then get the students to write beside each picture if that color day is good, bad, kind of good, etc.

Product
Students will learn from this website that every day is not a nice day to play outside. Air pollution effects the way we live and can soon make it to where we can never play outside. I hope they will be able to see the effects of air pollution and what they can do to their community to make better air each day.

Activity 2

Title
What's All the Fuss About?

PLO
Students will be able to answer the five given questions about air pollution after seaching the link to Environmental Kids Club.

Materials Needed
paper
pencils
computer

Procedures
Step One: Introduction

Teacher starts couphing uncontrollably, (or teacher can ask student to do so).

Once children as, "What's wrong," say, "It is the air pollution!"

Then ask children, "Why should we worry about air pollution?"

Let children respond.

Step Two: Teaching the PLO

Let students go to a computer lab.

Divide the students into groups of two or three.

Let them search the link Environmental Kids Club, and answer the following questions by writing the questions and answers on a piece of paper:

What is air pollution?

Do you produce air pollution?

What can you do to reduce air pollution?

Where does air pollution come from?

Why should you care about air pollution?

Once completed, go over questions and answers with students.

Step Three: Activity

Let children decide between two activities from the website:

Go to Activities and Experiments link. After reviewing material needed and the activity, actually do experiment.

Go to Pollution Puzzle link. Complete the puzzle and turn in to teacher.

Students will be able to answer the questions asked and understand the meaning of each question. They will have added to their knowledge the effects of air pollution and what they can do to help reduce air pollution.

Activity 3

Title
Who Thneeds Pollution?

PLO
Students will be able to point out the difference in the page colors of the book, The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss, due to air pollution.

Materials Needed
The Lorax by Dr. Seuss

Procedures
Step One: Introduction

Ask question, "Who Thneeds Pollution?"

Students will ask, "What does thneed mean?"

Describe to students that a thneed is something everyone needs.

Step Two: Teaching the PLO

Read The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss, to the children.

Do a page walk with the children. Let them see how the page colors differ.

Ask them, "Why do you think the page colors go from bright colors, to dull colors, and back to bright colors?"

After they reply let them point out the pages where the colors change and tell you why the color changes.

Step Three: Activity

Let the students go to the Save the Trees Game link

Let them play the game with Dr. Seuss.

Product
Students will gain an understanding of how humans can change the air from being clean to dirty. They will also understand that we can make the air go from bad to good by looking at and comprehending the book, The Lorax, by Dr. Seuss.

Problems That May Occur
Students may have a problem putting a table in the document and formatting the table correctly. They may also find it difficult if they want to use a larger font or a different font style.
