java

I can't upload/attach files, send mail, or post discussions. Why is Java important to WebCT?

Java is a program that is a very important component of WebCT Vista. If you do not have the correct version of Java for WebCT Vista 3 or if your Java has somehow become corrupt, you may have difficulties (this affects uploading and attaching files, using HTML Creator, posting to discussions, sending WebCT mail, using the chat and calendar tools, etc.).

For WebCT Vista 3.0.7 (the current version at VSU) the validated version of Java is Java 1.5.0_07 (Also called J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7 in the Windows Control Panel). Multiple versions of Java on your machine and certain versions of Java can cause problems. It is important that your computer is configured with the correct version of Java to ensure the best results when logging in and working within Vista.

Other Factors (Can't open or add attachments)

  • Another factor which seems common is a bad connection across the Internet to the VSU Vista server can result in one's computer deciding to give up before the attachment is actually completely uploaded.
  • Various pop-pup blockers, toolbars, security software, and malware (computer viruses, adware, spyware, etc.) could potentially intefere with the triggers necessary to open the window or accept the file attached. As there are thousands of these programs which could be causing this, we cannot list them for you.
  • Try a different web browser. It is already installed in VSU computer labs and offices. Home users can obtain Netscape 7.2 at the Netscape web site.
  • Browsers can be tricky in how to open a some attachments. It is recommended you save every attachment to you desktop (or another folder on your computer) and open it
    • This ensures your anti-virus has a chance to scan it first.
    • This removes your web browser from making the decision as to which program will be used to open the file.
  • If the file was corrupted prior to being placed in WebCT, then no one will be able to open the file. The creator should verify their saved copy is fine and resend it to WebCT.
