Content Management
Publishers and Writers
Each unit must designate at least one writer who will be responsible for creating and maintaining the content of
the unit’s pages. An appropriate writer is someone with a strong understanding of the unit’s mission, goals, and
achievements. Web design experience is not necessary as the writer may work with a publisher to ensure the
content is appropriately placed online.
Each unit must also designate a publisher, who will be responsible for editing and publishing the unit’s Web pages. The publisher has final say before content is officially placed online. The writer and publisher may be the same person; however, they are not required to be the same. Writers and publishers should be trained to use the designated Web editing application.
The unit head is expected to supervise this writer and may be contacted should problems arise. All units should first consult with Web Services in Information Technology before creating any Web site. Approval by the Director of Information Technology is necessary for hosting Web pages with outside vendors.
To request a designation as a writer or a publisher, complete the form on the Web Services Web site.
Accountability
University units are accountable for the information they publish. The unit’s publisher/writer is charged with
maintaining standards of clarity, accuracy, and timeliness. All spelling and grammar checking should occur before
the Web page is published. Web pages should be reviewed at least twice a semester and updated as necessary.
Contribute
Writers and publishers update Web pages through Contribute, a software application for editing the content of a Web site. Contribute is a desktop (client-side) application allowing a
wide variety of people within an organization to update Web pages by reducing the amount of Web design skills
necessary for the process. Employee and Organizational Development periodically offers educational classes or personal tutorials on the program's use. Contact Becky Murphy at (229) 259-5106 or visit the EOD Web site at www.valdosta.edu/finadmin/training/.
Visual Identity Guide
All publishers and writers should read and consult the Visual Identity Guide when creating and updating Web pages.
