Q: What is the purpose of this organization?

            A: The main purpose of S.U.R.G.E. is to foster a community that is educated about issues surrounding women, gender, and sexuality. Other aspects that S.U.R.G.E. will work towards are creating opportunities for people in the VSU community to become active participants in addressing and dealing with issues surrounding women, gender, and sexuality.

Q: What do you do as a member?

            A: You can do a lot of things as a member. You can participate in our campaigns, become active in events that we will develop, table, become active in developing community events, and you will also become active in community service activities. 

Q: How do you become a member?

            A: Anyone that is a regularly enrolled VSU student who is passionate about heightening awareness and actively participating in issues surrounding  women, gender, and sexuality. You also have to be in good standing with the university.

Q: Is it only for women?

            A: No! This organization is for everyone that cares about issues surrounding women, gender, and sexuality. That means that men can and should be included as well. Gender affects us all as individuals; therefore, we should all be participants in promoting and educating ourselves around the issue.

Q: What do you do as an organization?

          A: Well, our main purpose as an organization will be to educate and provide resources to our VSU community surrounding issues of women, gender, and sexuality, and will do this in a number of ways. Some of the things that we will do as an organization will be to: table, disseminating literature surrounding issues of women, gender, and sexuality, invite guest speakers, develop panel discussions, and develop community events and fundraising events. We will also be involved in a number of other activities as well. For example, the sexual intervention and prevention program that VSU is trying to start, V-Day/Vagina Monologues, Lecture Series with the Women’s and Gender Studies Department, Domestic Awareness Month, and Women’s History Month.

We might also develop some activities and events surrounding such issues as: Ending violence against women, uncovering feminism, reproductive freedom, health and body image, and promoting diversity and ending racism, etc.  

Q: Why is there an organization like this on campus?

            A: Because all university campuses should house organizations that provide students with educational resources surrounding social issues that involve them directly!  This organization is on our campus to try and educate our VSU community about issues that affect them while also providing opportunities become active in these issues.

Q: What is in it for me?

            A: Leadership opportunities, the chance to become educated around issues that INVOLVE YOU!! The chance to become an active agent (person) in society that gives back and provides others with opportunities to become active agents (people) in society, etc.

Q: When are your meetings going to be held?

A: We will hold meetings every Wednesdays at 6:00 pm in room 1480 in Odum Library. The room is located on the first floor, near the periodical room.

Q: How much time will I spend doing stuff for this organization?

            A: The time you spend will depend on your involvement in the organization. If you wish be involved and take on a leadership opportunities then you might spend some time doing stuff for the organization. Basically, your time spent will all depend on the amount of time you wish to spend and dedicate to this organization.  

Q: What is the structure of the organization?

            A. The organization will consist of a President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasure

        Fundraising Committee: The Treasure will also be in charge of developing and carrying out fundraising events.

         Outreach/Education Committee: This committee will be responsible for developing outreach and educational events and programs concerning women, gender, and sexuality issues for the VSU Community.

         Community Service Committee: This committee will be responsible for developing community service activities and projects for organization members. The committee may also open up community service activities and projects to the general VSU community.

 

Q: Will everyone have a voice in this organization?

            A: Yes!! Everyone will have a say so in all decisions that the organization will develop and take part in.
