Honor Societies

Being one of the top leaders is an honor worthy of prestigious recognition. Valdosta State University is proud to offer members of the Greek community The National Order of Omega, Gamma Sigma Alpha and Rho Lambda Honor Societies.

The National Order of Omega

The Order of Omega was founded at the University of Miami in the fall of 1959 by a group of outstanding fraternity men, who felt that individuals in the Greek community should be recognized for their service to the fraternity system and the university. The Miami chapter had long desired for their organization to expand to other colleges and universities. The chapter gave its sanction to Dean Patrick W. Halloran to make initial inquiries and to further grant charters to universities that were accredited and interested in the purpose of The Order of Omega. The organization became co-ed in 1977 and now has over four hundred chapters in the United States.

The Zeta Omega chapter of The National Order of Omega was charted at Valdosta State University in spring 1986. Membership is open to qualified junior and senior undergraduate Greek-affiliated students by application each year. Please click here to complete application.

Purpose of Order of Omega

  • To recognize those fraternity men and women who have attained a high standard of leadership in Interfraternity activities, to encourage them to continue along this line, and to inspire others to strive for similar conspicuous attainment.

  • To bring together outstanding fraternity men and women to create an organization which will help to mold the sentiment of the institution on questions of local and intercollegiate fraternity affairs.

  • To bring together members of the faculty, alumni and student members of the institution's fraternities and sororities on a basis of mutual interest, understanding, and helpfulness.

  • To help create an atmosphere where ideas and issues can be discussed openly across Greek lines and to help work out solutions.

Rho Lambda is the National Panhellenic Recognition Honor Society. The Panhellenic Association of Valdosta State University reestablished the Alpha Pi chapter here in Fall 2001. It is now one of 104 active chapters in the nation.

Rho Lambda was founded at the University of Miami (FL) in 1962. It served as the Panhellenic counterpart of The Order of Omega, which at that time was open only to fraternity members. In 1974, Rho Lambda received permission from the National Panhellenic Conference to become a national organization.

Candidates for membership must submit an application to the Office of Greek Life. Rho Lambda will then extend an invitation to those who qualify.
