In the Spring of 2009, President Keasha Brown had just appointed freshman Kameron Farrow into the position of Vice President, when she thought that more males should be involved in Black Student League. That is when she decided to start the Black Male Initiative office, with the purpose of not only getting more people to join Black Student League, but to specifically target males and get them to be more involved in their community and campus. Thinking of another name that had would be both catchy and have some meaning to it, she also named the office the Gentleman’s Club, because those were the type of men she envisioned helping Black Student League grow and move to an even higher level, gentleman. After appointing Cameron Williams to be head executive chair for this new office, the Black Male Initiative threw its first event titled, “The Black Male Initiative: Exceeding The Vision,” which featured Kerry Lassiter and a special guest speaker by the name of Gabriel, a young man who motivated and inspired the audience in a way that you would expect someone twice his age to do. Later on, Williams and Farrow got together to discuss the focus and goals of the office, and The Gentleman's Club was in full effect, with ideas aimed on reaching out to and achieving in the community.

Gentleman's Club Purpose: To establish professionalism, exhibit leadership, and establish character within young men not only in the organization, but also outside of it. In the future, the Gentleman’s Club hopes to impact not only the Valdosta State campus, but also in the community. The Gentleman’s Club will host forums throughout the school year for the men at VSU, as well as for high school young men aspiring to be gentlemen.

To become a member of the Gentleman’s Club, you must have a 2.7 GPA, be a member of Black Student League, and have an interview process with the Office Chair, President, and Vice President. For incoming freshman who want to join and be a part of the Gentleman’s Club, your high school GPA must be a 3.0 or higher, you must be a member of Black Student League, and you will go through the same interview process listed above. We thank you all in advance for your desire to make an impact on your campus and community!
