Breast Cancer Awareness Month:
Did you know Breast Cancer is one of the leading causes of female death? Not only can it affect women, however; it can affect men as well.
What better time then now to learn about Breast Cancer and what you can do to be precautious…
WHAT IS IT?
Breast cancer is a type of cancer where cells in the breast tissue split and grow without the normal controls on cell division and cell death.
WHAT CAUSES IT?
Scientists are continuing to research Breast Cancer; however, breast cancer has been found consistent with 3 main factors:
- Genetics: Family history of Breast Cancer
- Lifestyle Choices: Diet; drug & alcohol use
- Reproductive Factors: Age of menarche and menopause
Catching it Early
- Mammograms aren’t usually suggested until age 40; however, if you have a family history of Breast Cancer you may want to consult your doctor at a much younger age.
- Though college students are typically in their 20’s, they should go ahead and start checking themselves.
- If you notice any significant changes in the way your breasts look or feel, you may want to get your breasts checked out.
- If you notice any of the following, please contact your doctor:
- Lumps, hard knots or thickening
- Swelling
- Breast Warmth
- Redness or Darkening
- Change in the shape of breast
- Puckering or Dimpling of the skin
- Sores or rash on the nipple
- Pulling in of any part of the breast
- Sudden nipple discharge
- Constant pain in one area
