SOCI 4540: Internship in Sociology
Course Description: Supervised on-site experience in an approved community, government or private organization for students who are completing the applied/ clinical sociology concentration. Professionalism, workforce transition, and application of sociological knowledge and skills are emphasized.
Prerequisites: Students must be in good academic standing, have a minimum of 90 credit hours earned, and have successfully completed or be concurrently enrolled in SOCI 3000, 3190, 3200, 3500, 3510 or permission of the Internship Coordinator.
Steps In The Process
- Apply. Student uses the online application to apply. Applications must be submitted by the midterm prior to the internship placement.
- Orientation. Once accepted, student must attend internship orientation (scheduled the week after midterm.)
- Placement. Internship Coordinator will contact possible practice site and informs student.
- Interview. Student contacts site for placement interview.
- Begin 1st day of internship is 1st day of semester. Internship Coordinator prepares paperwork to be signed first day of internship.
Student Evaluation and Assignments
This course is graded on a Pass/Fail or S/U basis. To receive a passing grade in the course, by the end of the semester students must meet the following requirements:
- Complete at least 150 hours (per 3 credit units) at field placement site;
- Be given a largely positive evaluation from their field placement site supervisor;
- Receive a grade of “S” on journal entries submitted weekly describing internship experiences;
- Participate fully (receive an “S”) in online discussions relating sociology to your internship experience.;
- Attend all scheduled supervision meetings;
- And submit a flyer describing the internship experience at placement site.
Failure to meet these criteria will result in a grade of ‘U’ or unsatisfactory for the course.
Important Dates for Summer 2010 Interns
- Internship Applications for Summer 2010 are due by midterm, Thursday, March 4th.
- Orientation for accepted Summer 2010 applicants will be held
Wednesday, March 10th 3:00pm - 4:30pm Rm. 1149 U.C.
Attendance is mandatory so plan accordingly.
