Sociology, Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Marriage and Family Therapy

Appointment:  The College of Arts and Sciences at Valdosta State University invites applications for Department Head, Sociology, Anthropology, Criminal Justice and Marriage and Family Therapy. This is a twelve-month, tenure track faculty position. Preferred starting date is July 1, 2010. The department has over 550 undergraduate majors, 60 graduate students seeking degrees, and provides service courses to over 1000 students. The 22 full-time, tenure-track faculty in the department support the educational mission of the four-year regional university. Department Head teaching load is generally two courses per semester.

Qualifications:  An earned doctorate in Anthropology, Criminal Justice, Marriage and Family Therapy, Sociology, or related field. Candidates must have a demonstrated record of teaching, research and scholarship, and professional and service activities to support an appointment to full professor within the Department. Candidates must also demonstrate: a commitment to academic excellence and faculty development; experience in managing budgets and personnel; a commitment to diversity and social justice; evidence of strong oral and written communication skills; technological literacy; successful experience in obtaining and administering research grants; and ability to employ strategic planning and expand academic programs.

Preferred Qualifications:  Evidence of collaboration with colleagues and community agencies; faculty experiences with undergraduate and graduate programs; leadership in professional organizations; involvement in study-abroad programs.

Responsibilities: Provide academic leadership for teaching, service and scholarly/professional activities for an applied multi-disciplinary Department. The successful candidate should show support for faculty teaching, research, professional development, service to the community, and participation in professional organizations. Develop and implement immediate and long-range departmental goals within a strategic planning process. Promote curriculum development, and communicate clearly and openly within the Department. Create recruitment and retention strategies for organizational growth and development within the programs. Prepare and administer departmental budgets. Provide written evaluation of faculty to the Dean for pre-tenure, tenure, post-tenure promotion, retention, and professional achievement awards. Make recommendations to the Dean for the hiring of full-time and part-time faculty members, and graduate assistants.

The Department: The Department of Sociology., Anthropology, Criminal Justice and Marriage and Family Therapy, located in the College of Arts and Sciences, offers Bachelor of Arts degrees  in Criminal Justice and  in Sociology and Anthropology and Master of Science degrees in Criminal Justice, Marriage and Family Therapy and Sociology. The undergraduate and graduate programs in Sociology are accredited by the Commission on Applied and Clinical Sociology; the Marriage and Family Therapy program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education.
