From The Director

Dear Parents and Students,

Classes for South Georgia String Project will be starting up again on 14 September, this coming week! I am looking forward to meeting the new students, and to welcoming returning students back to our program here at VSU.

Registrations are still being accepted for new students, so if you know other families who want to join, please spread the word to your friends, and turn in your own forms if you haven’t yet done so. We are so excited to have you come play with us!

Here are a few things I want to share with you before we start:

  • If you are a new student in Explorer Strings and don't yet have an instrument, come to the first day and we will measure you and recommend an instrument size. We can also check on any students who might have outgrown their instruments. You can then visit the music store and bring your new instrument to the second class.
  • On occasion there are parents who wish to participate in the String Project. You should register with me as a regular student, and you are most welcome to participate. Our only requirement is that you attend all class sessions, just as your child will.
  • If you have questions or concerns, you are always welcome to contact me by email. This year I am answering both your musical and administrative concerns. Checks and registration forms should be sent or given to me. My email is: dcgerling@valdosta.edu My office phone number is 229-259-2087. (Leave a message.) Please note: It really is best to use email to contact me. Try to use the phone only for emergencies or to inform of us of last minute absences due to sudden illness.
  • Parental support and involvement is crucial to the success of the SGSP. I look forward to meeting all the new parents, and would be very happy to hear from anyone looking to volunteer for us with set-up, receptions, and any other ideas you may have. Our returning parents are a great and dynamic group and I wouldn’t be able to run this program without their help and enthusiasm!
  • Mark your calendars for our end-of-semester concert on Monday, 7 December, at 5:30pm!

Thanks so much for your participation in SGSP! I look forward to seeing all of you on September 14th!

With best wishes,
Dr. Daphne C. Gerling
