Concise Mission Statement
For the past two years, members of the Valdosta State University community have been engaged in a variety of strategic planning processes -- retreats, committee meetings, task forces, etc. A high priority in these processes has been the creation of a mission statement for the institution.
In October 2003, Dr. Zaccari appointed the Core Value/Mission Statement Task Force to create a concise version of the mission statement. This concise mission statement does not supercede the existing (full-length) mission statement. Instead, it simply provides a shorter, easier-to-read statement of the core values and the mission of the University.
The Task Force reviewed the discussions that took place at the September 2003 Strategic Planning Retreat regarding core values and mission, attempted to identify the essential ideas, and then crafted those ideas into a single, coherent document. The resulting statement has been reviewed and endorsed by the University Planning Advisory Council (UPAC) and the Institutional Planning Committee of the Faculty Senate (IPC). Now it is being shared with all of the faculty, staff, and students in the campus community.

The Faculty Senate will be reviewing this mission statement at its March meeting, so it is important that you share your comments with your representatives as soon as possible.
Concise mission statement *
The mission of Valdosta State University is to:
• Prepare our students to meet global opportunities and challenges through excellence in teaching and learning.
• Expand the boundaries of current knowledge, and explore the practical applications of that knowledge, through excellence in scholarship and creative endeavors.
• Promote the economic, cultural, and educational progress of our community and of our region, through excellence in service outreach.
VSU seeks to accomplish this mission in a dynamic, student-centered learning environment marked by respect for the diverse abilities, backgrounds, and contributions of all members of the university community.
