Safe Space is an international program that has been initiated in many different institutions, businesses, living spaces, universities, colleges, and high schools to promote accepting and fostering environments for the LGBTQ community.
This program is individualized for the needs of each institution and Valdosta State University is proud to host its first ever Safe Space Program. It entails training students, faculty, and staff on becoming allies and supporters of the LGBTQ community that is present on the entire campus.
The goal is to promote a safe, secure environment so that a person of the LGBTQ community never feels harassed or unwanted at Valdosta State University.
The program is a 3 hour session that will tackle issues such as bullying, hazing, offensive language and gay-bashing and how we as campus can unite to put an end to it. It will include introductions to key terms, resources on and off campus, as well as special guest speakers from around the community and the nation here to bring insight to the campus climate.
The program is broken into 3 different one hour sessions. After completing the program, allies are awarded a certificate of completion and a sticker to place in an open and viewable location so the public can recognize it as a Safe Space.
