Punta Gorda - Belize

Tropical Belize, where Central America meets the Caribbean is a wonderfully diverse country that offers a host of intriguing study opportunities from a Western Hemisphere's largest barrier reef, to a vibrant ethnic melting pot. Formerly British Honduras and mainly an English speaking country, its people are friendly and they exhibit a host of cultural adaptations.

Who:
VSU students majoring in Anthropology/ Sociology, Writing and others with a strong interest will be considered. Students should have a 3.0 GPA or permission of the Director.

What:
The VSU Belize Summer Field School operates as an ethnographic field school It provides an opportunity to learn about and apply anthropological research methods, and develop the writing skills needed for the practice of cultural anthropology. Students will participate-observe in the village of Punta Gorda (population: 3000) on a topic to be decided upon in consultation with the professor.

When:
The term of operation for the upcoming field season is May 30, June 21 2008.

Where:
The itinerary of the VSU Belize Summer Field School involves taking up residence in the coastal village of Punta Gorda for the majority of time (Monday through Friday), and for weekend side trips to places of interest (e.g. the reef, the rain forest) elsewhere in the country.

How Much
The price is $2176. It include airfare and in-country travel, accommodation, two meals per day and excursions. The price does not include tuition.
