Accelerated second degree program
Frequently Asked Questions
Hello. Thank you for your interest in the Valdosta State University Accelerated BSN program. Here are a few answers to some common questions that are asked about the program:
When does the program start?
We begin the program once a year during summer semester which is usually the very beginning of May.
How long does the program take?
The program is 4 terms or 16 months (summer, fall, spring, and summer).
What are the core requirements?
Core requirements are listed on the website at http://www.valdosta.edu/nursing/CoreCurriculum.shtml. For an official review of transcripts to determine if substitutions are applicable, please either fax unofficial transcripts to 229-333-7306 or you can copy and paste them in to a document and email them. Typically email submission is easier to read and is preferred if possible. Remember that all transcripts must include number of hours and grade obtained.
What bachelors degrees are acceptable for admission to the program?
Any bachelor’s degree is acceptable as long as you also have met or will have met the core requirements by the program start date.
Can I apply if I am not finished with my core classes?
Yes, application deadline is January 15th each year for May of that year. As long as you can submit evidence that you will have all of the coursework completed by the program start date you are eligible to apply.
What else must I complete other than core courses?
Applicants must first pass the standardized admissions test prior to the application deadline. Valdosta State University administers the Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS). The dates for the TEAS given at Valdosta State University are listed on our Prospective Students web page. You must contact Nicole Gunn at 229-333-7308 to reserve a place as seats are limited. You may take the TEAS at another institution and have results sent to us, however, they must be received no later than January 14 and must meet our passing requirements. It is best to take care of the TEAS in advance so that the scores may be evaluated prior to the application deadline to ensure adequate time for retesting is given. Scores are valid for up to one year from the testing date.
If you have taken a different nursing entrance exam at another institution, please send them in for consideration.
How are applicants evaluated?
After the admission deadline all applicants, provided they have passed the TEAS, are ranked according to grade point average. GPA is based only on the courses used on the core course worksheet. NOTE: Admission criteria are being reviewed by the faculty and may change.
Is advising mandatory?
Yes, advising is mandatory. Most advising can be done via email or telephone. If you intend to attend one of the advising sessions listed, please email Michelle Gilbert, RN, MSN at megilber@valdosta.edu.
What if I am not going to be ready to start the program in May 2010?
If you are not ready to start the program in May 2010 but are interested in starting at a later date, you can still contact Michelle Gilbert, RN, MSN at megilber@valdosta.edu for a transcript review or to answer any questions. It is always better to be advised early to avoid being unprepared when it comes time to apply.
How do I apply?
You must first apply to Valdosta State University either for admission if you have never attended VSU or readmission if you have attended VSU in the past. Information on admission to the university can be found at http://www.valdosta.edu/admissions/. Information on how to apply for the accelerated BSN program can be found at Prospective Students
