VALDOSTA - The Georgia Wine and Spirits Wholesalers selected junior philosophy major Daniel Mares as the 2008 scholarship award winner.
The Valdosta Native is a 2005 graduate of Lowndes High School, where he held a 3.7 GPA. Since he began at VSU, Mares has maintained a 3.98 GPA and made dean's lists every semester. He is a member of the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society and works part time as assistant manager at Valdosta Stadium Cinemas.
Mares said he chose to major in philosophy because he loves discussion and hearing about every viewpoint to an issue. He feels this major will expose him to the most ideas and give him a variety of career options. His minor in religious studies, more specifically in applied ethics, will open doors for corporate conflict management or other human resource positions.
Daniel is one of 15 recipients this year and one of 1001 recipients since the foundation was established in 1965. More than $47,000 was distributed to students in non-research University System of Georgia Institutions this year, which fulfills a goal of providing a scholarship to each institution at least every other year. Last year, the Atlanta-based Wine and Spirits Wholesalers of Georgia Foundation reached the milestone of distributing more than 1,000,000 in scholarships since its inception.
