Total Lunar Eclipse Over VSU
Valdosta State University’s department of Physics, Astronomy, and Geosciences will open the observatory to public visitors on the evening of Saturday, March 3, from 6 - 9 p.m. for the viewing of a total lunar eclipse, the first eclipse in over two years. In addition, visitors may also view the planets of Venus and Saturn, the Pleiades star cluster in Taurus, and the Great Nebula of Orion.“Our goal is primarily to provide a public service,” Dr. Kenneth Rumstay, professor of astronomy and physics, said. “By announcing the circumstances of the eclipse, we’re helping to make people more aware of the night sky overhead; and, by making our telescopes available to see not only the eclipse, but other objects of interest, we hope to awaken an interest in astronomy among the general public.”
