A Life of Direction

Characters on stage may slay the dragon, get the girl and turn the other cheek; but the theatre industry doesn’t always have a storybook ending -- a reality that guides Associate Professor of Theatre Duke Guthrie as he consoles students’ through educational exploration with a respectful, but firm hand.

But don’t let his candid disposition fool you. The managing director of Peach State Summer Theatre seems to care about his students and the Valdosta State program as much as the air he breathes. His unconditional devotion is what led the university to bestow upon him the 2010 Excellence in Service Award -- given each fall to a faculty member who exudes leadership, commitment and professional development. Faculty Showcase Artistic Vision

The Fine Arts Gallery — located at the corner of Brookwood and North Oak Street — is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 3 p.m.

Alum Kicks off Langdale Series

Steadman Shares Alumni Perspective

SteadmanAlumnus Gordon Steadman will discuss the journey from new graduate to seasoned executive during the Fall 2010 Langdale Lecture at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 1, in the Pound Hall Auditorium.

As vice president of development and corporate information officer for Elkins Constructors, Inc., Steadman oversees business development and marketing while also participating in conceptual project planning, client relations, public relations and strategic planning. His company will be responsible for construction of Valdosta State University's new psychology building, which will begin this fall. More >

Lift Up Your Voice

Choral

The Valdosta Symphony Chorus will hold placement hearings for the 2010-2011 Season on Tuesday, Sept. 7, from 7-8:30 p.m. at Park Avenue Methodist Church.

The VSO Chorus will be performing with the Orchestra on both the November 20 and April 30 concerts. Chorus members will also have the opportunity to travel to New York City for a performance in Lincoln Center.

Both men and women are needed in the chorus. The chorus is open to anyone interested in great choral singing who lives in the surrounding Valdosta communities. Rehearsals will be on Tuesday nights from 7:00-8:30 at Park Avenue United Methodist Church.

New Faculty Orientation Sessions

New Faculty Orientation (NFO) seminars will be held during the next few weeks. Although these sessions — sponsored by Academic Affairs — are designed for new faculty members, any interested faculty are invited to attend.

The first session, which will explore VSU resources for faculty scholarship, will be held at noon on Friday, Sept. 3, in the Student Union Meeting Room 1 (third floor) . Interim Assistant Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School, Dr. Karla Hull, will facilitate the discussion and answer questions about research and resources at VSU. The session will be repeated at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 7 in the Student Union Heritage Room (third floor).
