Concert Choir

The Valdosta State University Concert Choir is one of two choral ensembles in the Department of Music. The Concert Choir serves as the principal ensemble for vocal majors. Concert Choir has an annual enrollment of one-hundred students or more. Students receive one-hour credit and meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1:00-1:50 p.m. There is no audition and students receive one-hour for the class. Students who participate do need to have some background in choral singing and be able to read music.
Concert Choir prepares two concerts each year. The fall concert is generally shared with the Chamber Singers. Literature is highly varied and offers something for everyone. Selections for the fall 2006 choral concert features students soloists in Mozart's "Regina Coeli," "Hear My Prayer" (A Sacred Cantata) by Felix Mendelssohn with soprano soloist Marti Schert, "Island in Space" by Kirke Mechem, "Sleep" by Eric Whitacre and a new spiritual, "Walk Together Children" by Anthony Leach.
Spring semester the Concert Choir generally combines with the Valdosta Symphony Chorus and joins the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra in a performance of a major choral work. Recent works have included the Requiems of Mozart, Faure, Brahms and Verdi, the Ninth Symphony of Beethoven, Orff's Carmina Burana, Missa Solemnis by Beethoven and a complete performance of Messiah by George Frederic Handel. The spring of 2007 the Verdi Requiem will be performed to celebrate the Centennial of Valdosta State University and the twenty year celebration of the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra.
