Shannon Lowe serves as an instructor of bassoon, music theory, and chamber ensembles at Valdosta State University.  She received her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Bassoon Performance at SUNY Stony Brook.  While at Stony Brook, she was in the bassoon studio of the renowned performer and pedagogue Dr. Frank Morelli and an instructor of a rudimentary music theory course.  Currently, Dr. Lowe is the principal bassoonist of the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra and Albany Symphony Orchestra (GA).  During the 2008-2009 season, she frequently performed as bassoonist with the Amato Opera Company in New York City.  She received both the Bachelor’s in Music Education with a Performance Certificate and Master’s of Music in Bassoon Performance from the University of Florida, under the dedicated and outstanding instruction of Dr. Arnold Irchai, former principal bassoonist of the Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra.  Dr. Lowe has performed with orchestras in the southeast such as the Florida Orchestra, Central Florida Symphony, and Central Florida Philharmonic. For six seasons, she was principal bassoonist of the Gainesville Chamber Orchestra.  She was a founder and member of The Palm Trio and Quintessential, two chamber ensembles that performed to high acclaim in various venues of Northern and Central Florida.  She has participated in the Sarasota Music Festival and International Music Festival in Burgos, Spain. She has premiered contemporary works for the bassoon at the Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival as well as the Third Practice Electroacoustic Music Festival in Richmond, Virginia. Additionally, Dr. Lowe was a winner of the 1998 Central Florida Symphony’s Young Artist Competition, debuting as soloist with the orchestra in two concerts on Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto. On a side note, she is one of the few, if not only one, to have performed the exposition of Mozart’s Bassoon Concerto for the captain (over speakerphone), crew, and passengers at over 30,000 feet on a late night Southwestern Airlines flight from NY to Florida.
