Understand RDF and PICS, how they are applied, what third-party services
are required. Attempt to apply RDF and PICS to a Web page of choice. Consider
the role each can play in managing information in libraries. How difficult
are they to implement and manage? Discuss these issues on-line. |
The World Wide Web Consotium Metadata Initatives
The World Wide Web Consortium is an organization created in 1994
to support and develop common protocols and standards across all Web media
and platforms. It is an organization of organizations. W3C articulates
its position as seven points:
universal acess, semantic Web, trust. interoperability, evolvability, decentralization,
and "cooler mulitmedia!"
W3C has developed two metadata initiatives, the Resources Description
Framework (RDF) and Platform for Internet Content Selection (PICS).
Resource Description Framework (RDF)
RDF might best be described as metametadata. It is a system for integrating
WWW metadata into a common standard.
Platform for Internet Content Selection (PICS)
PICS provide metadata labels of WWW content. It is a coded indexing scheme.
