Information Architecture
The field of information management and presentaion is undergoing redefinition
and significant growth. A new discipline, information architecture is emerging.
If the American Society for Information Science is correct, the field is
very broadly defined and included at minimum: Anthropology, Data
Modeling, Graphic Design, Meta-Data, Human Computer Interaction,
Information Design, Information Retrieval, Interface Design, Markup Languages,
Librarianship, Technical Communications, and Usability Engineering. Data
mining and drilling could also be added to the list.
The field is as yet undefined. Undefined fields offer unlimited opportunity
for those who participate in its formation. ASIST
has sponsored a conference to help understand that new dynamic. Many of
us believe that librarianship can bring a great deal to the Information Architecture
table. It is my hope that this course helps prepare MLS and others for that
new field and its opportunities.
