| Come to the MCL office and obtain a "Declaration of Major/Minor form" (or download one here). The form will need to be signed by the language adviser and turned into the Registrar's Office for processing | |
| Who do I speak with about attending a course that is already full? | Overrides in MCL are handled a bit differently than some other departments. Graduating Seniors and majors have priority for overrrides. Other admission to classes that are closed is at the discretion of the professor and may be dependant on the seating capacity of the classroom. The department secretary coordinates all standard requests for overrides. Direct written permission from the professor only has to be obtained if the secretary has reached the limitations on overrides for the class. Override limitations are based on actual classroom capacity and the immediate needs of the student. |
| Where is the language lab? | The language lab is located in West Hall Room 138. |
| Are there tutors in the lab to help me? | Tutors are available in Langdale Hall on the 2nd floor in the Student Success Center. You can contact the Center directly for hours at 333-7570. |
| Is there a fee for tutoring? | No, tutoring is included in your student fees. |
| May I take more than one lower level language class in the same semester? | No, courses are offered in sequence. The only exception is Summer which is broken up into three separate semester terms. Lower level classes are 1001, 1002 and 2001. |
| How do I find out when my professor has office hours? | Office hours are posted on the door of the professors office, on the bulletin board in the MCL office (WH128) and here on the website. Office hours change each semester. In most cases, if you cannot make it during office hours, you can e-mail or call your professor for an appointment. |
| Is there a test I can take to find out what level class I should take? | Yes, there is a placement test. Anyone taking a language course may take the test. It is recommended even if you have had a language in high school. If you would like to take the test, contact the department secretary to set up a time and date. |
| If I took a language in high school, may I take a 1001 level course for credit towards my degree major? | No, however the 1002 level course may count. Please contact an advisor in the language department to assist you in choosing the appropriate course for your level. Other policies may apply with regard to this question. |
| How do I drop a course after late registration? | After late registration courses may no longer be dropped and students must withdraw from the course. Classes may be dropped using the WEB withdrawal process up to a specific date each semester. This date may be included in your syllabus. If you need information on using WEB withdrawal and the dates it is available, please contact the Registrars Office or see your adviser. |
| What is the difference between a withdrawal and drop? | A withdrawal is noted on your transcript, a drop is not. When you withdraw on the web after the official drop add period you are withdrawing from the course and not dropping the course. Please contact the Registrars Office at 333.5727 for further clarification, or consult your course catalog. |
| Do you offer Arabic or Chinese? | Yes, contact the Center for International Programs at 333-7410 for more information on these new programs. |
| How do I contact my professors if I will be out for an extended period of time that will cause me to miss significant class time? | You should contact the Office of Student Affairs and they can instruct you as to the best way to make the necessary notifications. If you are going to miss just one class, you may call the office and leave a message for the Professor |
| What if I have need to add/drop after late registration? | Once the drop/add period has ended, students may not drop/add a class unless they complete both an add/drop form and a petition for late registration. On this form, they must give a reason why they are registering or dropping a class beyond the deadlines. The forms must be signed by department heads or appropriate directors, the Dean, and the VPAA. |

We do hire both work study students and student assistants for both our language lab and our office. Limited positions are available.
