Media Services: Scanning

The most ubiquitous use of Photoshop in Media is in scanning. Go to File | Import | then select the scanner to be used. Depending upon the workstation, the following menu may appear different (determined by the scanner being used, whether it is the larger Umax or the smaller HPs). The process to be followed, however, is fairly uniform. After placing the photo or document to be scanned face down on the scanner surface, squarely aligned, select the Preview option from the onscreen menu. This will produce a preview of the final scan. At this point, it is possible to change the scanning resolution, if so desired. As a rule, the higher the resolution (in DPIs, dots per inch), the higher the quality of the scan will be, with a corresponding increase in file size. Usually, the range will stay between 150 and 300dpi. Select Scan to complete the job and return to the Photoshop desktop. Another scanning program available is Omni Page Pro 15. This program uses OCR(Optical Character Recognition) to scan word documents and turn the images into an editable text document. This is particularly helpful when you have a hard copy of your paper that you need to revise but somehow your digtal copy has been corrupted or deleted.
