Searching Sociological Abstracts

Full-text articles are NOT available in this database.  Sociological Abstracts results will provide citations and abstracts for articles.  This database is useful when conducting a literature review on a research topic.  Remember, NO full-text!  Once you get your results list, you will then take the citation and search in E-Journals for the full text.

  • Access GALILEO
  • Select Sociological Abstracts from the Databases A-Z tab
  • Select the Advanced Search tab
  • Enter in your search terms/subjects into the search boxes (note the Boolean Operators AND, OR, NOT are available).  Select the appropriate Boolean Operators to “connect” your search terms/subjects together
  • Limit your results by checking the Journal Articles only box
  • Select search or press the enter key

Searching for Full-Text Article Availability

Searching in E-Journals is very helpful when you have an article citation (such as, the citations you would receive from searching Sociological Abstracts).  This database allows you to search for Journal Titles available in many of the GALILEO databases at Odum Library.

  • If you are Off-Campus: Go to the Odum Library homepage, http://www.valdosta.edu/library/
  • Select Anywhere Access (located left side of screen under Main Menu)
  • Type in your BlazeNet username & password
  • Select "E-Journals"
  • Type the name of the Journal you are searching for in the FIND search box
  • If the Journal is available in electronic format, the title will appear followed by a list of databases the journal is available through, and the years available.
  • Select one of the available database names
  • Select the appropriate year of publication
  • Select the appropriate issue
  • Select the title of the article (selecting pdf or html full-text will allow you to print)

Please note: sometimes you will see the message referring to an "embargo”.  An embargo means the full text is witheld for the stated period of time. E.g., "Embargo 1 year" means the full text for articles published in the last year are unavailable, even if the coverage note indicated full text to the present.

If a Journal Title is not available Online in an electronic database, try searching for a print version in the GIL Catalog.  If Odum Library does not have a print copy, you can submit an InterLibrary Loan (ILL) request to have a copy made of an article and sent to you.
